I was recently bequeathed a Lionel pre-war O gauge set that I'd like to know more about. It has the original set box and all the cars are in their individual boxes. Unfortunately, a piece of tape partially obscures the set number. All I can make out are the last three numbers: 233. The set includes a 258 engine, 257T tender, 806 yellow stock car, 807 red caboose, 803 blue hopper, 804 gray tank car, and a 902 light blue/aqua gondola.

I have looked online in an effort to identify the set, but - while I could find individual pieces/parts - I had no luck finding the set. The only other thing I can add is that the man who gave it to me was the original owner and he said he got the set as a Christmas present sometime in the 1930's.

Thanks very much in advance for anything you can tell me.

Jim

Could the gray 804 actually be a dull aluminum? Aluminum would be correct for 1930. There was a set in 1930 had a 803, 804, 806, 807, 902 with a 258. It's number was... 233.

The yellow 806 is throwing me though. Early green body, but typically orange body by that time. Yellow isn't in that list. The 803 is likely peacock, which depending on the month it was painted, plus aging, could look like anything from blue to green. The same is true of a late 20's to 1930 902. Pictures would be good.

Thank you all for the information. Bill King, you're correct that the color of the tank car is aluminum and the 806 is orange rather than yellow.  I had copied the box description of the car rather than actually looking at it. And 1930 would seem right. Jim was born in July 1924 so the dates are correct.

I will admit that there's a certain charm to this, but I think I'll stick with current production items.

Thanks again,

Jim
