I'll be building a 2 rail diarama soon. I'll want to have about two feet of mainline track and a turnout for a siding (about 15" long) with a small freight platform.

I could use some help in selecting a turnout and track. My only past experience is in PW Lionel. The diarama will be non operational except for some lights.

I'm looking for a comfortable degree of realism in the turnout and track, not dead on accuracy. I'd like the two tracks to be parallel and maybe no more than 6" center to center.

So the questions are- What turnout should I buy? Whose track should I get? Ready made track would be my choice, I'm not looking to lay and spike the rails.

Would anybody have anything for sale? Mildly used is fine.

Are you looking for two-rail track and turnout? Go with Atlas flex and a #7.5 turnout.

I re-read your post and what you want to do is not possible in two feet. An Atlas #5 turnout is about 14 inches long. There is just no way to get two feet of track with a 15 inch long siding. If you start at the point end of the turnout, you'd get maybe a 10 inch long siding, but there would not be any room in front of the points. To do what you want will require closer to 3 feet. Start the turnout at 7 inches in and you will have a 15 inch long siding (7 + 14 +15 = 36). Sliding the turnout farther down the main track will reduce the siding length inch for inch. I can draw you a diagram if you like.

When I first read your post I wondered if the 24" of mainline requirement included the turnout.  If it does you can do this using one of the old Atlas 24" radius turnouts from the 1970's -- these have been out of production for years, but can be found economically on the second hand market.  This turnout would permit a 14" long siding;  all non-turnout trackage can be cut from a length of current production Atlas 0 flex.   [ I did a mockup of this after your initial post just to see if it could be done and what it would look like.]  You can cut off the clunky operator from the turnout with a saw to improve looks.

Any chance of sending or posting a picture of that mock up, however simple?

Thank you.

Sorry, no digital camera.  [ I had one, but didn't realize I couldn't replace an SLR with something other than a DSLR.]

If you wish to see what the Atlas 24" radius turnout looks like, just search "Atlas 6021" on Ebay;  there's one or two for sale.  You'll also see the current production -- Atlas reused the stock # -- Atlas #7.5 Mr Publisher originally proposed;  as it is 24.5" long itself, you'll have little trouble telling the two apart.

Good luck with your model.
