Fired up the crane and boom car and everything worked fine. Sounds from the boom car working. Turned power off. When I turned power back on, crane works but no sounds from the boom car. Both units have same address. I have tried AUX1-9 to turn sounds on but nothing happens. Is there a reset on the boom car that I do not know about? Appreciate any suggestions.

No, no reset code is available. Check to see if you are losing power on a dead spot of track or maybe dirty track.
You may want to call Lionel customer service to see if there are any other tricks.

Do you hear a hum from the speaker, even though the unit is not producing sound? I had similar symptoms, and the root cause was a faulty railsounds power board and a scrambled chip.

I recently fixed one of these, the little TMCC receiver board croaked. The same design board is used in the Vision Line tank cars, and I had a bad one of those as well. One wonders if that board is marginal...
Update. Tried again today. Put battery in boom car, sounds all came on and it worked like it is supposed to--whistle, crew talk, etc. Took battery out as I never used one before. Still worked. Turned power off. Turned power back on, no sounds. Tried putting battery back in, still no sounds. Tried the Aux1 9 commands and then the 7 button to turn sounds on which worked when I put the battery in the first time, now nothing. I am really confused now.
Don't feel too bad. When these thing first came out the fix was to leave it alone overnight. I know it doesn't make sense.
We had ours coupled to the crane in a yard track with parallel tracks on each side, The big hook worked but not the boom car. The fix was to move the car to the main track (single track) I know, not much help.
I think I would look for loose wires or the volume pot since its by the battery.

No loose wire. I have had the same thing happen. Leave it overnight and it works. Do not understand that
Finally sent it back to a Lionel and everything is fine.
I have the first edition Pennsy. Not a good idea to get a first run on a product like this. The bugs haven't been worked out yet. Great model when it works. Good luck with your's.
I had a similar problem, and it turned out to be a bad wire connection inside the shrink tube where the wire connects to the pick up roller. I would pick it and look around, put it back on the track and it would work. Next day it would not. leave it alone, pull it around the layout, and next time I tried it, it would work. Drive me nuts til I found it.
Took it apart to check for a loose wire. Did not find one, everything looked fine. Put it back together, fired it up and now it works. Do not know for how long, but it is working now. Maybe I reseated something somehow.
