Hello forum members, does anyone have or know of actual prototype photos of exterior and under carriage, lightweight 'Pullman coaches. I've searched Railnet and other sites but can't find any real examples. I have a "American Standard Car Company' kit. No instructions, and no photos, or drawings. These are old school kits. I can figure out the body. But the under body and details are the mystery. So any help would be appreciated. I searched for directions also, but, no dice'... Thanks in advance'... for your help'..

try the "modeltrainjournal" forum. put www. in front and .com in back of that name. It is a much smaller forum, but there are mostly older kit builders on there. You might get some information there if does not show up here.
Thanks Jim, I'll check it out'...
The Pullman Standard series of books would help you. What car is on the end of the box? Request a print from Newberry Library or IRM?
big train posted:I think the current owner of the lightweight car kits originally marketed as American Standard is an active member of this forum. You might try contacting him to see if he can supply information.

Good luck!

Built many of these for others and all of them contained the same rudimentary instruction sheet for assembly, NO prototype info at all in the boxes.
I've built several of these kits and set up the underframe detail as a separate piece that screws to the bottom of the car.
The arrangement of parts is generally correct for a C&O Pullman Standard car. Other roads' cars may have a different arrangement. I also added some extra detail parts that don't come in the kit. There is enough there that I think it looks pretty good viewing from the side of a car without skirts.

Great work on those ALW's Ken, I like the concept of the underbody and interior as separate assemblies too. I've pined away for those "Robert R Young" coaches with the center partition for awhile and it still looks like the ALW kits are the only way to get some.
Regarding QG48's plight with locating plans for the correct underbody layout, that can be an iffy proposition. Some of the specific passenger car plans published in MR and RMC (Carstens later compiled and republished the RMC car plans in three volumes) in the past have included the underbody, while others have not, it's very hit or miss. Mainline Modeler's car plans included beautifully detailed underbody layouts, but the cars covered were mostly older HW plans. The PS and Budd Library series by Randall and Anderson (aka the red books) are great but very incomplete with regard to underbody information for a given builder's plan, and have no drawing corresponding to the side view plans provided. I've occasionally found what I was looking for in historical society bulletins and on the web, and or (as a last resort) emulated the layout of an HO model version for the car I was building (repeating someone else's mistakes no doubt.)
It never hurts to ask on the forums as you're likely not the first to build the specific model you're working on. When you do include as much information on your prototype including the road and the series #s, builder and plan #s as you have. Likewise BobbyD's suggestion to request a print from the Newberry Library or the IRM's archives is an excellent option and one that custom builder's like Calumet Models often turn to in obtaining the correct plan.

I went there, noticed nothing new has been posted since 2016. Ironically, most recent post is a 2016 Wall Street Journal link to an article—behind paywall, but you can watch the 3 minute video—about how model railroading is dying...

You might find that if you were to click on the word "FORUM" at the top of the Home Page there that you might actually find something totally different.
I found a web page, 'The Pullman Project'..Some verbiage information in detail. And some floor prints of underbodys. May be helpful to some looking for historical details. Now, the kit I have, has very few of the details being shown in the beautiful models built by Ken. No interior seats, or extra details. It does include a selection of underbody eqp. I have studied numerous sites for approximately 32, hours over the past three days. The best info found so far is this Pullman Plan, found through a link on http://passcarphotos.rypn.org/ .
Not done researching yet. Thank you to all those that provided tips and information. I appreciate it very much. It appears to me, in the past years, this type of assistance was not to be enjoyed on this forum. I'm very happy to see and appreciative of the comradity now being shared'..... Speaks to the quality of the membership... and time well spent'..

Quarter Gauger,
What's the number on the end of the ALW box? That number is the Pullman Plan number for the car. That can be helpful in finding out which railroad owned the car and to find additional pictures.
I haven't looked at The Pullman Project's website for a while, but I think most of the underbody equipment drawings are for heavyweight cars, not lightweights.
Ken
Yes Ken, you are correct. They are underbodies of HVYwts. No pics of LtWts... I don't know how different from each other they would be. AT one time that site was probably great. But it hasn't been maintained in 10 years in most segments.
There are no numbers on the box, looks like they were crossed out and can't be identified.
I may very well use your examples of your first model, as it looks very prototypical. I haven't seen anything that looks better, and I have been searching like crazy.......
Quarter Gauger,
Look through this topic.

Ken
Ken, I found this sleeper, Accordingly, the model I have is the barber shop, lounge, bar, DR, and roometts. the bottom configuration should be similar from what I read on the 'Pullman Project', site. The Newberry site has boxes of material on Pullman. But you must go there in person to the library. They will download the files to you, but for a considerable fee$$. Library of Congress, doesn't have really anything of use.. Thanks for all your help' Ken...
