When I moved I had to store my trains in a unheated storage unit. The temps last year was the coldest on record, getting in the low single digits most of the winter.
There were no problems once I took my trains out of storage and ran several of them as soon as I got back to the layout. There were no problems at all with either the steam or diesel engines.
I would unpack it, let it sit a while to room temperature and then fire it up.
No rush to run it - you will have it another 30 years.
I would just let it acclimate naturally in your house, before running it. It shouldn't take that long to get to room temperature on it's own and will give you time to look it over and lub it all up.
Plastics can get brittle from extreme cold, metal contracts...but most likely everything will be just fine.
Condensation on the electronics might be something to watch for also? Could be worse than cold oil or grease. We used to give laptops a good 30-45 min or so to warm up after spending the night in a cold vehicle. Getting it up to room temperature sure wouldn't hurt anything.
I always wait two hours on extremely cold days.
Leave it packaged 2-3 hours. removing from packaging just as it came out of the cold will cause condensation
I agree, let it acclimate to room temperature. Two hours should do it. Good luck with your new engine, hope you enjoy it.
