Okay, great. Lion Chief 2.0 works. Several control options, including conventional. Looking forward to seeing this set on Monday.

Edit: If I'm not mistaken these will be the first LC F3s produced. They've done the FTs but no F3s.

John B I couldn't agree more!  I would love for them to do a scale Pennsy T1 and what would make it so much better is that they haven't done one.  Repeat engines every 3 to 5 years just aren't too exciting.  Lionel better be careful because unless these new GS4s have some innovative new feature why would you spend $2k on a new daylight if you bought one from just 3 years ago?  I figured with the historical importance of the year there would've been a good shot of getting the T1, but oh well.

Any other road names of the F3s?

I think the whole mike car thing has been made pretty clear directly from Lionel. While the mike cars were very highly accurate models, the intention was to move production away from China. This was one product that got caught in the move, there might be more, I don't know.  According to Ryan (maybe Dave) the tooling was the hold-up and still is.

The last thing I remember Ryan stating was that for the project to move forward, new (read expensive) tooling was going to be needed, and that was not going to happen anytime soon. Maybe moving from China is not as easy as some would have us think.

My guess is that Lionel really tried and wanted to use the most excellent tooling already available and held off on making new products until all avenues to get the old tooling back in use, were exhausted.

As much as it might hurt, maybe it's time to just cancel the car.

They are making Vision Line GS-1, GS-2, GS-3, GS-4, GS-5, and GS-6 in various road names and configurations. Many have matching scale passenger cars. (SP Lark, SP Golden State, American Freedom Train, Chessie Steam Special, SP 5-Car Freight set, and SP Daylight w/ passenger cars)
Twenty-seven GS series locomotives in all.

GS1. Never done in 3 rail O. I've been wanting one for years, but at $2K+ it's going to be well out of my price range.

Now the GS2-GS6 have been done to death in 3 rail O scale. Why they would choose this for a Vision Line brass hybrid locomotive is beyond me (well I know, easy sales). It's incredibly easy to find scale GS2-GS6s from MTH, Lionel, or 3rd rail, and they aren't exactly horribly expensive. I can get them all day long in the $400-600 range. Doesn't seem worth the extra $1K+ to have steam shoot out when I toot the whistle.

The GS1 is a great idea. But if you're doing a brass hybrid tooling cost is minimal. Make something that hasn't been done before in 3 rail O. Santa Fe 3400 class Pacific, Southern Pacific AC-4 cab forward. Things that can use existing running gear with different boilers. Heck there are probably dozens of road specific Mikados that'll fit their light or heavy Mike chassis. But more streamlined GS2-GS6 class Northerns? Pass. Overdone.

Only the gs1 is brass hybrid

That makes more sense then. Use the chassis from the diecast GS2-GS6 with a brass boiler. If I could afford one I'd preorder it.

But my point about the other GS2-GS6 locomotives stands. They are overdone.

Qurstions:

1.  How much of the stuff will actually be made?

2.  How long will we have to wait before product gets here?

3.  Will the products be robust?

4.  Will the products be painted correctly?

5.  Will the products sound right?  Example, there was a comment about the GS4 whistle being wrong.  Err, there is one sitting in Portland OR.  Been in excursion service longer than in regular service.  Plenty of sound recordings.

Are we talking “postwar style” F-3 LionChief Plus 2.0 engines similar to the upcoming GG-1’s from the last catalog???

Been waiting for these - surprise me on the road names 🤔

Love my LionChief plus NW2 postwar style switchers - they never skip a beat 👍🏼

Thx Lionel

Since there is a very recent For Sale post where someone is selling Tuscan Red PRR F3's from the MPC era, I thought maybe, just maybe Lionel has finally decided to reissue them with can motors and current electronics in the 2020 Signature catalog.

My answers based upon the last few years of experience pre-ordering:

1.  How much of the stuff will actually be made?

Everything I've ordered.

2.  How long will we have to wait before product gets here?

Usually 6-12 months.

3.  Will the products be robust?

So far, so good, although I don't run stuff much.

4.  Will the products be painted correctly?

Yes, in my experience.  Then again, I'm flexible, reasonable and lacking in fixed opinions.  I recognize that you can find a prototype for virtually everything that Lionel makes in various black and white/color photos from various periods of history.

5.  Will the products sound right?

Yes, in my experience, but see number 4. My arrogance is far exceeded by my ignorance, so I'm easy to please.  Others not so much .

The only area I see of concern that is problematic is #4.  There have been difficulties with color and finish that have been posted.  Typically if something is amiss from an operational standpoint, Lionel has stepped up to the plate.  As far as colors are concerned, they are going to correct the mis-blue PE RPOs, but have not heard anything on the Santa Fe passenger car silver or the stripe on the J Class.

Color is really tough with passenger sets because they have to match the other things, one might be an engine.  For that reason, I am hesitant to do BTO where the items are manufactured in different factories.

Hopefully they will get the details right on the different classes. GS-1, GS-2, and GS-6 had 73" drivers. GS-3, GS-4, and GS-5 had 80" drivers. They haven't been too good on the main rods in the past either.

Pete

Gs2-6 are diecast, not brass guys.  Gs1 is brass hybrid.  Drivers look the same on all but main rod is different depending on the class.  The T1 now has the correct trailing truck....and there are some new features on the gs4 that trickled down into legacy, and a new legacy diesel option.... Color changing marker lights are on the GS and T1.  Selectable horns on legacy diesels to customize to what you prefer.  The new innovation found ONLY on the GS models is very cool if it works reliably.  I will leave that for Monday for you to read about LOL

I hope they didn't do a vision line GS-4 they just released those in 2017 and I spent $1400 to buy one!  I'll be so disappointed if they do a VL in that after offering it up so recently.  I'm personally hoping for Lionel to do a scale Pennsy T1 Duplex...I don't remember them ever doing a full scale version of it in legacy but I could be wrong

A.J

I have been waiting for a Pennsy T1 for years. I think a Vision Line PRR T1 that has one set of drivers that can spin like they are losing traction and the wheel slip sound effect would be great. I guess my wallet is safe for this catalog as I already have a B6 which is a great engine.

A.J.

You will be disappointed.  They did a Visionline of most GS engine types. Alternating cylinder steam is the new trick this year.  I picked up a 2020 Lionel Catalog from a local store yesterday.

JohnB

I agree on the B6.  I picked up one from the 2016 catalog and this one looks the same.  No swinging bell or whistle steam added from what I can tell.

I just saw the catalog. Honestly the starter sets and low end offerings are nothing short of brilliant.  The Polar Express Elf work train, the Toy Story set and yes the Frozen 2 set are incredible. The smoking Area 51 boxcar is cool and so is the new Area 51 set with the Green lights in the Fast Track.

Hate to get in on this; this is the first that I have looked at this thread, but I have to throw in some SP "Golden State" 4-8-4 prototype stuff. It may have been mentioned above. But, if the prototypes mean anything to you - and at this level how could they not?

The GS-1 was built by Baldwin; the GS-2 - GS-6 and WP GS-64 (and CofG "Big Apples", for that matter) were all Lima-built to a different design from the GS-1 (I'm not talking about the "styling"). The GS-1 has essentially no "details" in common with the others, is earlier, and is a more "lanky" loco. None were ever streamlined/streamstyled. They are conventionally handsome. I have wanted one for years and was always afraid that a 3RO version would be offered and that I would have to buy it. I hope that the "news" is wrong.

I just realized Lionel can now make a brass hybrid "Big Apple" Central of Georgia 4-8-4 with the GS-2 chassis and their 4-8-2 tender if they wanted to.https://www.railarchive.net/randomsteam/cog455.htm

I'm all for a CofG Big Apple - even with that silly-looking little tender, which is more the size something behind a 2-8-0. I know - shorter runs and shorter turntables, but, still.

And, still, I'd like to have one. But I think that this is about as likely as the streamlined NC&StL 4-8-4 (a "Dixie" in our part of the country; no way that they were "Northerns"), something else I'd pony up for.

The GS-1 is a beautiful brass hybrid locomotive with stunning detail.  Comes with two tender choices as well. I'd say it's as accurate as anyone could get.

It would be great if they do traditional F-3s in LC +2. Been hoping for that.

Incidentally, if they make the Tuscan red PRR version, I doubt it could look as nice as the MPC era version. The color and finish of those engines is beautiful.

The pictures were deleted at the specific request of one individual.  You can probably post pictures to your heart's content.  I don't think Lionel or the OGR management will likely care at this point.  That said, I haven't checked. I'm happy to wait until Monday, personally.  Delighted to hear that the sets and lower cost stuff is exciting.  That's the future of the hobby there, and Lionel's main source of income.
