I try to use all the space I have. Built this to fit on top of a dog crate. Its 4x3. Not finished yet. Just set it in place today.

Poor dog, it must be like living directly under the El
My dogs used to hide out under my layout like it was their doghouse.. I had to put a stop to it though.. Mastiff tails alone can whack wires loose, and it was only a matter of time until one wanted to floss their teeth too 
You deserve a medal for having to rail that second tier alone.

DOC, Congrats on your three tier layout. Looks neat. I did essentially the same thing about three or four years ago when I constructed an all tinplate 4x3 layout using the same Marx trestles you did only I quit at two tiers rather than three. Photos attached.
