Hi Everyone,

I have been following this forum for a few weeks and finally decided to join.

My name is George Zander, I am a single father with one son who is 10 years old and loves trains.

We live in New York City, which really adds to the train mind set due to the city's impressive railroad history and large mass transit system.

Our small/med sized layout is being constructed and utilizes MTH, Williams, and Lionel trains as well as DCS and Legacy.

Although, I do not subscribe to OGR, I do buy copies from the news stand if the topic grabs our interest.

Our favorite section of OGR, is obviously the layouts, but my son really likes Allan Miller's Editorials; my son claims he looks like his favorite Uncle Joey!

I finally made the plunge and joined the forum for 2 reasons, the first and main reason is that some issues have come up with our layout that we will need some assistance with, and this seems to be the best place to do that.

The 2nd reason is I feel in this internet age, one has to be somewhat careful with what websites their children go to and I feel a "model train forum", is the best place to start from both a hobby perspective and also a social one.

For example, I feel it is a lot safer when it comes time for him to post on his own here, than say a social networking site or a site regarding is MS XBox games.

For I feel, the older mature nature of this forum's membership is more akin to reading what one's Uncle or Grandfather might say, versus some of the more arrogant posts that the younger generation sometimes makes in game or social network sites.

Well, that is all for now.

I do have some additional concerns, but I will address those in private if need be.

Call me over protective, but even though my son is a pretty big kid for his age and plays football etc., I feel a parent must still be prudent.

Thank You

Welcome, George.  I enjoyed your comments very much and feel that you will be pleased with the help and camaraderie here.  I especially thought your comments about your son eventually being exposed to a better atmosphere on this forum than many others was very interesting and insightful.  While we do have a few crinches here, it's mostly a collection of people drawn together by their love of trains.  Most of us truly enjoy trying to help others and share our fun and knowledge.

Welcome aboard, I hope you and your son enjoy the ride.

Welcome, George!

I believe that you'll find this forum suitable for your son. There are some young members and early teens. A few roughed them up when they started on their language skills, but others squared them away.

When there's any adult content or innuendo, it's still safe and carefully written. So, any content he may read will not be offensive in that respect.

When it comes to help, the experience represented on this forum is unrivaled.

Enjoy the trains and the connection it provides for both of you.

Welcome to the forum. This is probably one of the safest places to hang on the 'web.

You probably can't swing a cat by the tail around here without hitting a "Grandpa". Even the curmudgeons aren't that bad. Just smell a little funky, but that's really not a problem in this venue.

You may want to check out the digital version of OGR magazine. In addition to added content, you have access to archive copies too. All in all, a pretty good value.

George- Good for you. I am applauding you looking out for your son and keeping him engaged in this great hobby.

Not sure if your son would want to hang out with us older folk, but I am always a good listener, hope you can solve your layout concerns...

Big thing is, you and your son run some trains together as MUCH as possible.

Beat it.  Get outta heah!  Yer not wanted.  There's too many of us already.

ONLY KIDDING!  I feel like this needs saying every so often due to the usual outpouring of hearty welcomes and good fellowship.

Can you tell I'm New Yawk City born and raised?  Got lucky and came to my senses in '76 and made good my escape, so that now I can offer you a warm Texas welcome.  There's a lot of really good help here but beware of forum peer pressure, which is not always a good thing.

Welcome George and your son! I think that you are going to like what you see and read. There are so many great guys and gals on this forum to help you whenever you need help. Their knowledge is outstanding and they have come to my rescue many times. Also, you will find the For Sale or Wanted part of this forum a great way to find what you may need or want for the layout.

Enjoy and good luck

Rich
