Hello all, Just joined mainly cause this sight seems to have the most knowledgeable members concerning the issues with the proto boards. I have a MTH U.P. gas turbine with what I believe is a Proto 1 bottom board that is bad. It has a smoked resister and what looks like a transistor beside it ( Transister is orange and marked EAS-5 Japan A 9528)( The resister has totally broken down and cannot read the color code to get the ohm value) . It was running when I took it apart, but it was smelling like burnt plastic when I found the issues. I was wondering if anyone has a extra good bottom board or a bad one I can rob parts from ? I can do the soldering myself. It has some of the traces bad but I was planning on just jumping them with wiring. I will try to post some pictures of the damaged board in a little bit. I was reading some of the posts here about upgrade kits to a PS2 system but I am unclear about a conversion from a PS1 to a PS2 and where to find a conversion kit. I looked at the MTH web sight and they only have these expensive PS3 conversion kits. I do not have a fancy command system and only some old Lionel ZW transformers and recently got a MTH Z-4000 transformer. I have several other MTH trains need fixing also so I would really like to learn how to fix these myself, PLUS I would like to teach my 8 year old son on how to repair trains. We have really bonded with the toy train hobby.

Before you proceed you may want to take the time to back up one step. It's important to determine exactly what caused the electronics to fail in the first place. Otherwise your repairs are likely to go up in smoke too. What you're seeing is most likely a symptom and not the root cause.
So, what is the root cause? Start with answer to this question: Which function doesn't work anymore now that the components have died?

Well I am not sure all what worked or not, at the time I only had some old Lionel transformers that I updated with new diodes and internal C.B.- I did not have the MTH Z-4000 yet. It ran forward and backwards and the horn and lights all worked. We just started to notice a burning smell and figured out it was coming from the gas turbine and I quit running it, took it apart and noticed the bad/burnt components. The resister did look like it had a "cold solder joint" and I figure that was probably the issue and its mounted and electrically connected threw a board trace closely to the transistor probably giving it problems. The resister was definitely over heating.
WELCOME to OGR!!!
Do you happen to have the MTH Model/Set number handy? I'll guess that it's the MTH 20-2124-1 (1996) Cab #5?
Yes its a MTH 20-2124-1 (1996- I think) Cab #5
Be patient someone will come along who may have the board... a lot of PS-1s have been converted. Additionally, for the '96 Gas Turbine and other PS-1 locomotives you may want to look at the PS-1 Trouble Shooting Guide...
https://mthtrains.com/sites/de...shooting%20chart.pdf
If you see a white battery in a PS-1 locomotive, get rid of it and install a new MTH green battery or any high quality battery. Make sure whatever battery is in it is charged and can hold a charge... if not, install a new battery.
Thanks for the troubleshooting guide, pretty much got all that down except for the PFA functions. Will have to practice those with another loco. The 1st thing i do is replace the battery when i buy one of these older locomotives. I probably have purchased at least 25 of those BCR " batteries " and most of the time it brings the engine back to life. If anyone has a old board or even a inop one I can rob componets from, I would happy to buy them. thanks for your help.
Your pictures are pretty blurry so I can't make out what burned up. If traces, resistor, and some other component damaged I would just replace the bottom board. Your board has soldered on wires for functions, and control of CV lighting. I have the bottom board. You can contact me by email from my profile. G
THANKS GUYS !!!! GGG is selling me a board. Myself and my son will be very happy when we get the gas turbine going again. Im going have to get with GGG with more trains i am having issues with after I trouble shoot them and/or try that code 18 on them with the MTH transformer I just got. My keyboard on my computer just went bad so I got to replace that before posting more questions. Its a pain posting on the phone. I have attached some pictures of the bad board. I am pretty sure its a PS1 board.

Yep, that probably warranted a new board, don't know what happened, but it doesn't look good.
