Question, what's difference between the real R-33 from R-26/R-21 redbirds cars? One (R-26) are married pairs and others not?

Hi DJ. I got my R-33s redbirds and had a chance to give them a run last night. These are my first MTH PS 3.0 subways (i have almost all of the PS1s and 2s). I have to say that i'm a little disappointed in MTH's quality control. All of the 4 car set and the 2 add ons have a slight paint defect around the rim of the round marker light next to the express or local sign. It was nothing that a little black touch up marker couldn't fix, but C'mon MTH. Second, two of my interior lights on the powered car were not working. This required me to remove the shell and spend about 20 minutes repositioning the bulbs to get them working. I was surprised that after all of these years, MTH is pretty much using the same crappy lighting system. What happened to the LED interior lighting and LED individually lit number boards as advertised in the catalog? I guess they decided to save some money and reuse this crappy lighting system. Another thing that all of you buyers of these cars should heed - the tinfoil heat shield attached to the interior roof of the engine car is razor thin and completely inadequate to prevent roof damage from a mispositioned bulb. You need to apply some better quality metallic silver tape to the interior roof if you want to avoid melting or bubbling. My roof was way to hot after just a few trolley mode runs with all cars. also, this is the first subway where a window fell off on the first day! it usually takes a year or so for them to loosen. Overall, i'm glad i got this set (its the same train i took from woodside into manhattan every day back in the 80's and it was a must buy for me), however, MTH needs to improve their game. The quality of the original r-21 redbirds is far superior.

Wow the QC issues are not cool. I'm interested in the Redbirds and 1 R33s WF car to add with my R36 set. But I'm not sure if I want to deal with all that. I used to ride the flushing line a lot in the 90's and would love a set of picture window Redbirds.... if they work right lol

Greetings. The main difference between the R33 and R26 is that the R33 are single cars added to 10-car R36s (two-car "married" unit) trains on the Flushing line enabling the MTA to run 11-car trains. The other difference are the side windows. The R33s have windows that open partially near their top, while the R26s have windows that open all the way from top to bottom.

Go for it, DJ. These issues aren't that bad to overcome. I'd inspect the four marker light rims of each car at your train shop and try to pick a set without paint issues now that you are aware of it. If you see that the cars have this issue, try to get your dealer to give you a discount and, when you get home, use a black marker to hide the smudge/unpainted area.  With my cars, it was only one of the four black marker light rims that was affected on each car (next to the express or local sign in the front or back of the car). It's easily covered up.  Installing better quality metallic silver tape in the roof of your engine car is also very easy to deal with and probably a good idea for all your mth subway engines with this lighting system.  Go for it.  I have to say that the new horn sound is an improvement on the ps1 and 2 subway sound sets. 

Now I need to score some of those mta New York subway decals in the proper size. The ones I bought from island modelworks are a little too small and I don't have time to make these myself. Any good sources for these?

MTH long ago back in 2004 - had color photos of the R-33 and R-36 Work cars in the Redbird scheme with the yellow ends and black stripes when we were working on the NYC Subway sets and planning for models of  various work-rider and work cars.  I recall that a number of the real MTA Redbirds (some surplus cars in 2003) started getting that new work car paint scheme treatment back in 2003 at Coney Island Shops.  It was easier and cheaper than re-painting the whole car body yellow.  

 

However, THE R-21 CLASS CARS WERE NEVER PAINTED IN REDBIRD COLORS in system service --- NOR DID THE R-21 CARS HAVE THAT 2003 year generated "Redbird Work Paint with Yellow Ends and Black Stripes" Scheme !!!  Any R-21 assigned work cars were all painted in the all-yellow scheme with black stripes on the ends  long before 2003  !.

You in fact copied the MTA 2003 year instituted " transition work colors " when you 5 years later in 2008 re-painted the ends of your MTH Redbird scheme  R-21 cars to create your Redbird color "work car" models,  (which you did an EXCELLENT Job re-painting the ends !)  , and doing so FOUR years AFTER MTH was already provided with copies of - and aware of in 2004  -  COLOR PHOTOS OF NEWLY PAINTED R-33 & R-36  WF Picture Window "Redbird  Scheme with Yellow ends, Black stripes" work cars in their files.  It is those file photos from 2004 that MTH likely used for these current 2016---2017 production  "Redbird Paint" work cars with yellow ends and black stripes !!    See photos attached below;

You have any pictures of the cars? Regarding decals. I have always used Island model works so I dont know any other source.

Those are some of the pro types of the mth car numbers.  Judging from your work, SIRT, it will probably be an afternoons work and yours will look much better!
