Steam locomotive no. 765 returns to the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad this September.

The locomotive will operate a variety of different excursions with open window coaches right behind the tool car, dome cars, photo runbys, entertainment, and more. The open window cars are former Nickel Plate Road passenger cars used in the 1984 film "The Natural."

The locomotive will operate September 7th, 8th, 14th, and 15th on a 2-hour trips, a BBQ picnic train, night photo session, and more.

Thanks Rich. I have been waiting for this announcement! It sounds like the trips will be longer than last time I went down to see you. That's good. I did the BBQ dinner and it seemed like a lot to pay for a dinner and a ride that only went about 5 miles total. Looking forward to it!

PS. Which whistle will be mounted this year?

The one and only whistle that should EVER be mounted on a Nickel Plate Berk, the NKP whistle.

As a matter of policy we are no longer putting "guest whistles" on the locomotive.

Music to my ears

BTW... I don't see the open window cars listed on the website. I'd really like to reserve seats in one of those. That's the one drawback to the CVSR cars. You are too insulated from the outside. Need to be able to hear and smell the old  girl

Rich,  Just did the great train robbery tonight.  Boy it was great!!!!!!  We got two run bys and were able to take film and still pictures with no problem.  The food was very good.  I enjoyed myself very much.  Thanks for posting these great trips.  Just lucky my daughter lives in Independence Ohio.  Ed Powers

Rich,

Saw a good program on RFD-TV "Trains and Locomotives" in which #765 was shown in several clips in her freight hauling days.  Noticed that you were not at the throttle.

After the program, I began to wonder about what different safety appliances/equipment that is on #765 today that was not available in the days of revenue service.

To comply with Federal laws under CFR 230, Norfolk Southern requests and general improvements, we have added the following upgrades, safety equipment and appliances to the 765:

  1. Tender Water Level Indicator
Allows checking of the tender water level from the cab.
  2. Cab Signal System
For use on NS between Cleveland and Harrisburg
  3. Diesel MU Controller
  4. End-of-Train Device Control Box
  5. Event Recorder
  6. Completely new electrical system and power distribution panel
  7. Two additional steam turbine electrical generators (to power all the additional electrical gear)
  8. Dual sealed-beam headlight

That's about it.

Got my reservations for the early train on Saturday and I'm taking my 16 year old Grandson on the trip.  I don't think that he's ever seen a real steam engine outside of a dead display in a park somewhere.  I doubt that I can make a real railfan out of him, but that doesn't mean I'm going to quit trying!
