I have and old MTH Premier F-3 in which I installed a PS/2 updgrade kit a number of years ago. It has worked perfect since that upgrade. I recently replaced the GOW bulbs with LEDs for the headlight and number boards. I also added green LED marker lights. After completing all of that wiring, I ran just the chassis around the layout to test the lighting. Everything worked perfectly. I gently placed the shell on the chassis and did a test run again before screwing the shell to the chassis. Everything still worked.

However, after screwing the shell to the chassis and placing the engine on the track and doing a startup, the engine made a weird sound from the speaker. It had no idle sounds and would not sound the whistle or bell. The Z4000 showed only about 1.4 amps, so no shorting to ground. I rolled the throtle to about 5 smph and the engine took off and I had to turn the handle back on the Z4000 to stop it.

Upon starting up again, I am still getting no sounds and the throttle caused the engine to take off again. DCS is recognizing and finding the engine so I did a factory reset with the handheld remote. I added the engine back in the remote and started up again with the same results. I then did a conventional reset with the 1 W and 5 B, it did not fix the issue.

I am at a loss. I had a perfectly running chassis, I screwed the shell to the chassis and the problems started.

I did check for pinched wires, exposed wires, cut insulation, etc and found nothing.

The funny thing is, I did this same lighting upgrade to another F-3 PS/2 upgraded engine simultaneously and that one is working perfectly even after screwing the shell to the chassis!

How can I get this engine to respond and function again? I have done a couple of PS/2 and PS/3 upgrades so I am comformtable with all of the wiring, but I just cannot figure out what is wrong with this engine.

Any help or guidance is greatly apprectiated, thanks.

Top suspect is a pinched wire that shorted one of the PS/2 wires to the frame.  You may not have found it, but that's top of the list.

I presume you took the shell back off and tried running it without it, right?

Yes, I have been testing without the shell. Since the shell is now removed the wires are just kinda floating, I am not sure how something may be shorting (no wires are touching the frame).

The problem is, the damage may be done.  The effects of shorting the lead to the frame is usually permanent, but sometimes it's not.  I think it's time to have someone test the boards, because that sure sounds like what happened.

How do I know?  I've been there.

As in remove the board and send it to a tech to be tested? I can remove the board, do have a recommendation on who to have test it? Thanks.
