I was surprised when Squires was named president a few years back as, like you, I thought Mark would have the inside track.  Insofar as Jim being named CEO now, that was more or less pre-ordained when NS elevated him to president in 2013.

 

I guess there is a certain precedent at work here too given that both Southern and N&W seemed to favor lawyers as CEO's over operating people.

 

The next question to be answered is who will replace Don Seale as CMO.

Wick is 63 and NS has a mandatory retirement age of 65.  Wick will continue as executive chairman for another two years, during which time both NS and Squires will continue to benefit from his knowledge and experience. 

 

Since the merger with N&W, NS has been meticulous about their succession planning and the long transition period you see here is typical of their measured approach.
