According to the Norfolk Southern website, this is what they say - NS Christmas Shutdown News.

As for me, I've never known NS to ever shutdown for that many days for a holiday. But I thought it was interesting. The question I do ask, is this true? How I heard of this, was on Train Orders.com.

Yea, I'm thinking that myself as I've never seen it where trains don't run somewhere on a Class 1 railroad during the holiday. That also means losing business to, if off for 3 full days. I just don't see that somewhere they run something. Example, the NS Eastbound Intermodal 20E and 24W are very high priority Intermodals and run everyday on the Cleveland Line.

I had sent NS a tweet reply to this announcement that they liked.  I had asked if I can still run an NS train under my tree on Christmas Day or does it need to stay still?

As I've read about how NS embraces their history (some 400 railroads and/or railways over time) and how they are with their workforce makes me like them more each day.  I got to meet their Head Archivist in Strasburg once, and she was one of the nicest people I've met!

Good evening, i think it was two years ago and just two days before Christmas I had some time from the Christmas decorating thing at home to spend an a few hours in the afternoon in Blairsville and Derry Pa.

This afternoon both west bound and east bound traffic was packed leaving just a few minutes between trains.

This was the best train watching day we ever had.

Almost like watching the trains run the loop on my layout in the basement !!!!!!!

For CSX, I will be willing bet, you will see trains running on the 24th, some are crucial to operations, the rest will be headed to a terminal as some terminals try to rid themselves of trains. I will also willing to bet trains will be running on the 26th, and track inspectors will be inspecting before the trains run. Time off is always welcomed, but you understand you have to work holidays.

I think it's great that the NS employees get a few days off. All the better if all the class 1's do the same thing. I am sure they are all deserving some time off with their families and what better time is their than Christmas.

Except for things like Military, first responders, and hospitals, it might be good for the nation to shut down, not just for Christmas, but for Thanksgiving.

As my career spaned four decades ....in the beginning the guys from ww2 went to work regardless of what day it was . The railroad would cut back a bit on holidays because the cost of labor was high. Road men did not recieve a pay diiferential for holidays. As time went by newer generational employees had no interest in working holidays and the railroad had staffing problems . Eventually this led to shutting it down for Christmas . It was never meant to be a good will omen.   and now you know the rest of the story !
