I assume the Southern Tier is getting PTC? Will it be installed all the way into commuter territory. I would think it would handicap traffic movements to have a gap of no PTC in the Susquehanna territory. Both CSX and NS use that for run throughs.

I haven't seen a CSX or NS run through on NYS&W in a long, long time.

Paul;
If memory serves me correctly, CSX ran a couple of high priority diversions over the route last spring after some wash outs disrupted the water route east of Utica for a day or so. NS ran one diversion over the line while cleaning up the Altoona derailment earlier this year.
Other than the "onesy/twosy emergency runs" all the action is NYSW.

Nothing came South into Jersey.
Mike, please excuse me for this on your post,
I just can't imagine the job of getting the whole nation's tracks onto PTC. It is beyond my imagination the scope of this upgrade. I guess like any job, if it's broken down into smaller tasks, maybe it's not so daunting? So all the RR's have to handle their own systems? They all have to work across company lines for competitors too?
I am not a railroader and probably don't know what's fully involved. I'm just wondering if they can't make the deadline, wouldn't they be forced to simply close lessor used sections like this one? (temporarily?)
I am trying to read up on the subject and only see the bits and pieces of the story and the progress being made.
I agree. PTC is a bit much...its only going to have a negative effect. Railroads will see this as increasing the operating cost of specific lines...possibly leading to closures even where traffic was still flowing (Clinchfield). Hence reducing options of efficient eco friendly transportation.
