Had some time today to spend on the layout and was running a MTH Big Boy 20-3127-1. Since new this engine would occasionally experience a problem with stalling and stopping, usually right after changing directions from forward to reverse. I have not run this engine in a couple of years so I thought I would put some time on it and see if the problem still existed. After about 15mins trouble free run time it finally acted up and sure enough it stopped dead. After some extensive checking, I'm fairly certain I have it narrowed down to a problem in the tether, and/or a tether connection. In the process of doing the trouble shooting I had to do a few feature resets. Immediately after selecting this engine to do the reset on I would get the display shown below. I have never seen this before, but it consistently happened several times. Any idea what it is?

I checked and you're right, a set of dying batteries doesn't give that message.  I suspect this may be the indication from the locomotive.  I seem to remember Barry saying that the battery low doesn't necessarily indicate a problem, it's telling you that the charging circuit is not delivering charging current, which may mean the battery is fully charged.

John,

I seem to remember Barry saying that the battery low doesn't necessarily indicate a problem, it's telling you that the charging circuit is not delivering charging current, which may mean the battery is fully charged.

You remember correctly.

As far as the "odd" display is concerned, it looks like an overlay of the INFO soft key with a CHECK TRACK error message. Unless it happens again, I'd ignore it and move on.

I had the same problem with an MTH J 611. Problem was with loose and worn out tether connection. Not wanting an expensive repair the technician said to put a little "liquid electrical tape" on both sides of the tether. Let it dry then insert into locomotive. Be sure to not get any on contacts. My J now works perfect. Hope it works for you also.
