I have to say, this is, for me, a tremendously interesting discussion. I am learning a lot (I hope.) I appreciate all the points and opinions made as well as the thread being permitted to survive.

I use my gmail account a lot more but I am on 7 Yahoo Discussion groups with no problems.
I have a i mac on TWC and get no almost no junk mail, maybe one every couple of months. Fred

It doesn't stop it and it does shift a good deal of the burden for filtering it onto you. However, it really is easy to filter if you take a little effort. My unwanted advertising e-mails go straight to the bit bucket. Since I enter a unique e-mail address for each website, I can find out where the spam is coming from (if I want to bother).
You also have to modify your behavior to protect yourself from the data-miners. It isn't just the websites. Yahoo and Gmail routinely data-mine your messages and sell the info to marketers. That's why you get their services for "free".
Almost two pages of comments and no mention of Mike Wolf's free email service. I've used two addresses, one for personal and one for business, for over 6 years. Very good spam filter.
