It doesn't stop it and it does shift a good deal of the burden for filtering it onto you. However, it really is easy to filter if you take a little effort. My unwanted advertising e-mails go straight to the bit bucket. Since I enter a unique e-mail address for each website, I can find out where the spam is coming from (if I want to bother).
You also have to modify your behavior to protect yourself from the data-miners. It isn't just the websites. Yahoo and Gmail routinely data-mine your messages and sell the info to marketers. That's why you get their services for "free".
