I've noticed a rather startling difference in the running qualities of the newest Lionel F3s, specifically the IC set...and that of the older CC offerings . The new units appear to run faster at any given voltage, and operate smoother, and quieter without the "crackling" sound commonly associated with the 2010 runs of these engines. Anyone else picking up on this? There's also a big difference in the horn as well, not the least of which is that the board is mounted to far off to the right on the frame, and pushes hard against the carbody...forcing it slightly outward. OTOH, the new horn has better operation with older Lionel transformers, and sounds MUCH better. I reattached the board on my IC with sticky foam. Of all the CC F3s, this is far and away, my favorite.

What does CC mean?
Conventional Classic! Remake of earlier Lionel engines& sets.

The new IC and Wabash F3s run very well but I can't really say for sure that they run better. I also had my NYC F3s from the 6-38310 set running and they seemed to be about the same to me. I'll have to do more testing.
But the new horns are a GREAT improvement over those made a couple of years back. They are much more reliable and sound a lot better.

The 2010 run of F3s was a rather spotty bunch overall, as none of mine run quite the same. Everyone I've talked to says their 2343 Santa Fs's are faster than their 2344 NYCS units. Same for me, but the NYCS engines start better, as in both motors at exactly the same time ...in both directions. The 2242 had a bad motor to start with, but once replaced, ran great. Really tempted to get another set of 2363s, once I find someone breaking up the set.
My New Haven F3"s are super smooth and quiet. Not sure if they have the same horn boards as the SF or NYC. Horn and Bell sounds pretty good though.

Awesome! Now I know where the next $300 is going. Already have an extra dummy A unit from last summer, so that will be two A-B-A sets. And the two powered As can be run together for really loooong consists. Thanks!
