Ryan,

I purchased a Lionel Polar RR K4 (scale) and had Harry Hieke (forum sponsor) paint it over to Pennsy K4 3380. Went from black to Brunswick Green with new classification boards including a new Keystone number board on the engine and a tender plack.

After that changing a number sounds easy. Get in touch with Harry at:

He is at York too Orange hall. He does terrific work. Highly recommen.

Ryan you could use Testor's Easy Lift Off or the equivalent made by weaver.  It's named in other threads about removing lettering from Locos and rolling stock.  They are slow acting paint removers, applied only to the lettering with a fine brush and then wiped off according to the directions.  either of the products should remove the numbers without damaging the base color and then you can re-number with decals.

I've had great results with Mr. Clean Magic Eraser..

**Test first As it may not work the same for all paint surfaces/manufacturers/eras**. This tank car is a current Lionel item.  Take your time...use light rubbing and don't try and do it as fast as you can.

Woodland Scenics sells a variety of dry transfer letters/numbers.  Some may work for re-numbering your WM locomotive.
