The beacon has a very interesting history. Airway Beacons were once the way for aircraft navigation. They varied in color by type of beacon and were placed at many high ground locations throughout the country.

You can search to determine if any were located by you. I live near the highest point in Summit County (1320 feet above sea level) and have located where an airway beacon was many years ago, I hope you find this interesting.
