Outstanding work! This gives me inspiration to get my small P48 layout (15'x2') going. So nice to see other modelers with very limited space doing magnificent things. You have taken readily available and inexpensive items and made them into masterpieces!

The shelving the layout sits on is a simple pair of IKEA "Kallax" shelving units. The white ones are the cheapest they sell. I paid £40 each for them. I'm sure I could have built something similar myself for much cheaper, but I intend to use these all around the room as storage and benchwork supports, so I wanted something that would be standardised across the whole room to ensure everything remained level. I had too many runaway freight cars on my old HO layout, so I've learned from that mistake!
Last night didn't see much progress on the layout, though I did finally manage to get round to replacing a broken truck-mounting pin on a Norfolk and Western bay window caboose, so that's another one to weather up and add to the fleet.
I also removed the cast on handrails and grab irons from a Williams centre cupola caboose kit and base painted it red. I also fitted some Intermountain (?) trucks. This will be getting some SOUTHERN decals to represent an ex-Savannah & Atlanta cab.
Regarding the tank car, here are the photographs of the 2 rail conversion on mine. I can't claim to have done it myself - I bought it this way!
Ah ha! Yes that would be a sturdy support for the layout!

JPV, I've also got a small 4 shelf version next to my crew sofa (nothing special, just an old sofa-bed that the previous owners left behind) thats full of copies of Trains, Classic Trains and a load of reference books.
They really are useful.

My daughters and sons-in-law love Ikea! It is a trip to get to the store in suburban Pittsburgh, but they always say it is worth it.
Not a lot to add for now, I've been busy with other things. Ford has taken the centre module away to work on the wiring for the Arduino, and is planning to mount a dedicated power supply under the board to handle the next stage of the lighting, sound and animation for the layout.

the modeling work is fantastic. but looking at the last trackplan, I could not find a run-around. How do you do an operating session with industries both facing and trailing, and not have a run-around?
It has a runaround. It uses the traverser table.
I assumed the traverser table was just used as a "fiddle" yard to get stuff on and off the layout.
