I am stumped here. I have a Legacy steam locomotive that seems to run fine when it is at Lionel being examined but here on my home layout does not operate.

After initial programming the loco runs correctly several feet it either runs away without any ability to control it or it just sits on the track and will not move. When it sits on the track without movement everything else functions on command. Both happen at the same places on my layout. I have many Legacy locos and all function perfectly everywhere on the layout with no signal dropping issues whatsoever. the only other evidence I can think of is that upon initial programming the loco operated correctly several feet and then went over a long Atlas O switch, power was interrupted, sound immediately cut out and the loco began to malfunction.

I have tried re-set many times and re-programming the loco many times with the same result.

Other evidence: I use Atlas O track and I have long Atlas O switches.

Anyone have suggestions?

If that's the case then try it on a part of your layout where you can go more than 3 feet without crossing a switch. Does it work? If yes then try putting the battery in it and crossing the switch again. Sounds like you have one that doesn't like long switches.

Yea after a year and a half of owning a 990 set I'm still learning. So far no issues with momentum but have had several others. I usually only use low and high on the momentum . I've never really found a need for the medium setting but I'm thinking since the others don't do it you've still got a glitch in the engine somewhere and yes it is weird.

Eliot,

Have you tried a different Legacy engine to see if problems develop in the same spots?  Can you try running your engine on someone else's layout?  If it runs fine somewhere else, that would make me think the problem is either with your Legacy system or with that part of your layout.  If I lived closer, I'd bring my system over and help you troubleshoot.

Have you tried adding a "ground plane", to those problem areas Eliot? Its been discussed many times before that "ground plane issues" often only occur with certain locos, not all. Its possible to have just one loco in your fleet that is having signal issues and requires a ground plane. I imagine your familiar with this, there are numerous postings if you do a ground plane search. A "crude"test of the signal issue would be to hold your hand just over the boiler in the problem area(s) if thats possible. If the loco responds normally with your hand over it, its likely a ground plane issue.
