Yup, the trains are running in Boston, kind of. We've had 98 inches of snow since Jan. 18 and the wind chill has occasionally been well below zero. The T (MBTA) shut down a couple of days due to the cold and snow, but is now running with limited service. Many instances of cancelled trains, significant delays of up to many hours, buses transporting passengers from station to station, people walking down streets 1 1/2 cars wide (sidewalks are under feet of snow) from station to station searching for running trains, police giving doctors and nurses rides to and from hospitals, inmates from local jails armed with shovels clearing tracks. Rain forecast for Sunday, and another storm Wednesday. Though they aren't on their regular schedule, we can still watch trains. I got a video of a commuter rail train running through Readville this afternoon.

Yesterday, TWO Acela trainsets had to be rescued in the RI / MA area. One was towed by the Providence & Worcester to Boston Switch where another Amtrak train took over and pulled it to Boston. The other had to be rescued by a Regional Train w extra engine - not sure of the exact details.

As Dotty stated, the amount of snow is daunting, the expectation of rain then freezing is pointing towards significant roof collapses in the area over the weekend. Not a good time right now in the RI / MA area.

I used to sell the sunday newspaper at the dunkin donuts in West Medford Square.  I always remember this one day it was snowing pretty hard and watching the Commuter Rail come through and bust down the built up snow at the crossing.  The best part was when the DownEaster would come flying through, those snow banks would explode!  I was just visiting my parents last weekend.  We don't have it as bad down here in CT.  It's crazy up there!  from our kitchen window we can see across a field to the commuter rail.  at night with all the snow and seeing the lights of the train, my mother always remarks how it looks like the Polar Express

I arrived at Baker Hall[Harvard]in 1978 on Sunday when it started snowing. During the week I remember looking across the river at the smoke rising from diesels left idling in the rail yard. Except for the diesels, the first vehicle I saw move after Monday was a National Guard halftrack chugging up Storrow Blvd on Thursday.

Fortunately we could make it from dorms to class rooms and the dining hall through the steam pipe tunnels---all the kitchen help and some professors were stranded also. This storm[s] sounds even worse than '78.

What ever it takes to get the shot…….well done Dotty.

Down here in Weymouth we had an 18-wheeler full of Fritos hang up attempting to cross the tracks. Crumbs everywhere as the Greenbush train came rumbling through! Wish I was there with a camera.

Dotty,

Hope things are back to normal by now...we had it bad down here in New York, but nowhere near like you had it. I remember hearing about the troublesd keeping the trains running up there and saw the head of MBTA decided to resign...

Just some small snow piles left down here, hope they are getting smaller there, too...pretty soon baseball will be here to distract us!

The snow is melting, only about 2-3 feet left, and the trains are running at about 80% capacity. The governor is pushing for 100% by the end of the month. We were still experiencing roof collapses due to rain and melting snow until a week ago.  March 4 our street was shut down for 3 days due to this building falling into the street and also taking down the poles and lines. BUT, at least the trains are running and people can get to work and school.
