How about this one!

NS 956 (the business train with the F-units) meets NS 958 on the Rockville Bridge. They got there first and stopped to wait for us. I was running the 765, and this was really special!

NS 956 meets 958

Photo by Casey Thomason, the NS corporate photographer, whom I had the pleasure of meeting in Enola today. The guy does GREAT work.

When we backed into the yard on the last trip today, the GPS speedometer showed that the 765 had run exactly 2,200 miles since we started this season. How about that. Just a little beyond half-way in terms of mileage.

Sorry, no pictures or video, but I did almost get arrested.  The NS cops showed up 1 minute before the 765 crossed the bridge westbound at 3:30 today.  He booted me and several others.  I did not get to video but at least I did see it.  It was awesome!  In some way it was good I could not video it because I got to watch it directly and not through the view finder.

Rich,

I'm pretty sure I saw you sitting at the window, you were not looking out and had your back to the window as you were passing through the curve before the bridge.  I was going to wave to you if I wasn't handcuffed!  Lol.  Just kidding, he let us go, but wasn't nice about it.

Brad,

I'm not sure but I think I saw you today.  I only know you from your Avatar.  Was that you standing on the roadside on the river side about 3pm?  I was in the silver corvette heading toward the bridge.  It looked like you walked up from a dirt road right about where your photos were taken from.  I'll bet it was you.

I may try again tomorrow on my way home.  I know another spot which is not NS property.  Maybe I'll have better luck.

Rich, I hate to hear stories like this, but they are a sad commentary on today's reality.  For all the good will that NS is generating this year with their anniversary events, it can easily go for naught when a couple of jerk cops are unnecessarily rude.  These clowns weren't the first, and they won't be the last.   Don't get me wrong... Everyone's got a job to do... I get it.  But generally speaking, there are increasing numbers of cops today that act like jerks when they're in a position of authority -- all in the sweeping guise of "security".   But the more they act like jerks, the more they lose respect in the eyes of otherwise very law-abiding citizens.

Hang in there... Like you said, you got a chance to experience 765 first-hand without working the camera yesterday.  Now best of luck finding a great spot today with the camera.  Stay off NS rights-of-way, and you should be fine.  Yes... The cops can sometimes be a pain in the ***, but you can always tell them to pound sand if you're on public property or other private property for which you have permission and/or proper credentials.  Been there... Done that many times in my profession... Always start on the high road and be respectful; but don't back down when they get rude and you know you're right.

Happy rail-fanning!!!

Rich,

Yes that was me. Your C6 caught my eye I saw you come back through after the 3p.m. run. If you want to try again today you may just want to go to that dirt road. It is just a fishing access to the road and the river is receded enough that you can walk 50 feet or so closer to the bridge on the river bed. It is a great vantage point. Just don't try to take the Vette down there. Park at the office building across the street.

Rich,

Why did the 3pm excursion leave 20 minutes early? I missed an eastbound photo opportunity because of it.

I totally agree David!

The police have their job but when they go terrorizing other people while they are trying to get a special moment I loose respect for them. Its all about the revenue.

That being said just keep this post positive!

Brad,
Yeah, that's what I thought.  If it wasn't for your good avatar I wouldn't have recognized you.   Thanks for the advice but I have another place closer to the track and not on NS property.

If I go it will be well before 3pm since it did leave early yesterday.  I drove by the Enola entrance at 2:45 and it was gone.  The gps stopped working right outside the yard so I thought it stopped and I was waiting for it to come over the bridge and didn't know it had already gone by.   I was surprised when the next location was by the Amtrak station so you can't rely on the gps.

Maybe I'll see you today.  Thanks again

Rocky,
I understand what your saying, but I'm not bothered by it since I did get to see the 765.  I should not have been there, but I took a chance since its a great spot.

Below are a couple of shots from my vantage point.  This was the noon time run of the 765 coming from Enola on it's way to Harrisburg.  Shot was taken on Saturday.  From some of the photo's above it looks like some OGR folks may have been pretty close to my location.  I was standing right by the river and went down a trail just south of the bridge on the eastern shore.  Rich, either of the gentlemen in the cab, you?  Anyway, could not have had better weather.  Lot's of folks were out there cheering you all on.  Thanks,  BigRail

I get it that everyone wants to get close to the train, but there are reasons the railroad does not want you on their property.  Last year the UP FEF came through kansas city, and I was astonished at the poor judgement the other train enthusiast exercised:

-standings on the grade crossing creating issues for motoring public

-climbing on the cross bucks to get that "special shot"

-standing in the middle of tracks with a camera (the railroad's employee are not allowed to do this)

-The worst part was no on was interested in monitoring the second main (double track main) while standing on top of the second main as the train past by on main one .

The fact of the matter is the railroad is a inherently dangerous place historically when not dealing with train enthusiast acts beyond normal rail operations.

Railfans are often their own worst enemy.

It left early because everyone was on board early.

The bus transportation NS had set up for their passengers worked much better than they expected, with the result that all the passengers were on board early. We have passenger manifests for each car, so we know when everyone is on board. No sense just sitting there killing time when everyone is on board and ready to go. So we left early.

And yet another NKP 765 Video!   This was taken on 8/19 of the 12:00 run. The weather was disappointing as the original forecast was for clear skies but it turned out to be heavily overcast.  Makes for flat videos. Shots of both eastbound and westbound are included.  I got to Enola right at 11:00am just in time to see the 765 reposition a little bit in order to start loading passengers.  Of course it moved from a perfectly visible position to one completely obscured by trees and brush!  I then scooted over to the east bank of the Susquehanna and got some good eastbound shots.  Got to talking to a few folks and found out that a B&B on the west bank (just next to the Rockville bridge) was renting out their lawn ($5 per person) for viewing and photography.  Went right over there and caught the westbound return traverse of the bridge.  Took a ride later to the TCA museum and the Choo Choo barn.

All in all a good 400 mile train day (and at 27 MPG!)
