We have a home network and not all of the pictures are stored on the laptop that I use for the forum.  If I try to post a picture that is stored on another computer in the network, it will show up on my computer when I am signed in; but nobody else can see it (I can't see it either if I am not signed in.).  Is there a way to post a picture that is stored on a different computer on a network? (Besides copying it to the laptop that I use.)  KD

That is incorrect.

If you upload a picture to the forum using the Add Attachments link in the reply box, it doesn't matter where it comes from.  I upload many pictures from my NAS (Network Attached Storage) to the forum, it's not an issue.  Remember, you're uploading the actual picture here, so as long as you have access to it locally, you can transfer it up to the forum.

There is no issue of people gaining access to your network by uploading pictures here.

I agree that it shouldn't matter where the pictures are located, lately I have been unsuccessful in uploading photos.  The pictures below are from the other computer.  The first one is loaded going through the network icon to the other computer... The second "photo" is uploaded using a shortcut that gets me to the correct folder on the other computer.  Apparantly, this is not a good way to get there (not sure why).  I cab see both photos as long as I am signed in, but can only see the first one when not.  Any ideas why the shortcut method doesn't work? kd

Neither picture is visible to me.

To post a picture here, you need to click on the Add Attachments link at the bottom of the reply box and browse to the picture on your local computer or network.  You can not simply paste the picture link into the message from the local computer, that won't work.

Here's what happens when you try to copy directly into a reply window.  I can see this picture as I create the reply, but nobody else can.

Here's what happens when you do it the proper way and upload it using the Add Attachments link.

If you use the "Add Attachment" feature built into this forum, it does not matter where the images reside on your network. The file will be uploaded directly to this server and served to the web from here.

Literally every image I post on this forum comes from a networked computer. The OGR office computers are all networked, as are three machines at home.

The OGR Logo below came from a hard drive on our in-house server here in the OGR office. By using the "Add Attachments" feature, that file has now been uploaded to THIS web server, where everyone can see it.

Okay, let's try this again...First of all, there is something hinky here.  We have a desktop computer, a laptop, and a Samsung Tablet.

gunrunnerjohn - I can see both of your photos on all three computers when I am not signed in.  In addition, I can see both photos on one computer at work and on another, I can see only the one (firefox browser).  As for my photos, when I am not logged in, I see both photos on the laptop, only the top photo on the desktop, and no photos on the tablet.  Both computer use IE9 and the tablet is Android.

When I load photos, I ALWAYS use "add Attachments" and follow the 6 clicks.  Since the photos are stored on the desktop, I have a shortcut icon that gets me to the main file on the desktop where the photos are stored.  I use this instead of clicking on Network, then the correct computer, then the first file, then the second file, then the main file where the photos are.

When I originally posted this it seemed that if I use the shortcut, the photos didn't show up and if I went the long way they did.  Since I now have 3 computers giving me different data, I am not sure and have loaded two different photos (see below).  The first one is going the long way and the second one is via the shortcut.

QUESTION 1 - Can anybody see the photos?

     QUESTION 2 - If so, which one(s)?

QUESTION 3 - Does anyone know why using the shortcut to the file on the other computer wouldn't work?  This, of course, assumes that you can see the first photo and not the second.

One other thing...when I do click on add attachments, I am asked if I want to "leave this webpage" or "stay on the webpage".  This happens only with the laptop and not the desktop.  Does anyone else get this message?

First off, I never see that message.  I've posted on this forum from my desktop, laptop, and even my Android phone.

Next, although the first picture technically should not show up, the Hoopla software attempts to decode smaller in-line graphics, and apparently it sometimes succeeds if they're small enough.  When the new forum software was first installed, I had a problem posting graphics because I just dragged them into the reply, which appeared to work.  What I'd typically get is part of the graphic and gibberish.

If you do it the way that Rich posted, they'll show up first time, every time.  I don't see any reason not to do that.

That could be the problem...This came up when I tried posting some photos of my latest project...Nobody could see them.  They are under the 25MB max requirement, but 3000 or more pixels on a side.  Could not figure out why things were not working.  Played around with it last night and narrowed it down to the shortcut.  I think some of the  wierdness today also has to do with "cookies".  Appreciate all the help!  kd

All you are doing when you use the "Add Attachment" feature is copying a file from your local computer to this web server. That's it. It does not matter where the file resides on your local hard drives or network. Once you navigate to the file, choose it and click upload, that file is uploaded to THIS web server and is served to the internet from here. It makes no difference in HOW you get to the file on your local computer (shortcut to a folder, direct access to the hard drive, etc.) it will ultimately get copied here.

3,000 pixels on a side! There would NEVER be a reason to upload something that large for direct viewing here. You would have to scroll all over the place just to see the image. The forum server will re-size it down to only 700 pixels anyway.

You are probably getting the "leave this web page" error because you have Pop-ups blocked or alerted. Set the browser to allow popups fro here and you probably won't see that.

One more thing...I see your photos just fine.
