I am not an expert on 6464 boxcar variations.

Over the weekend I picked up a set from the early 1950's that is known to come with an unusual variation of the 6464-1 Western Pacific boxcar. This variation is the presence of ribs on the underside of the roof. The Doyle book identifies this as a Type I, and describes it as being rare. (page 225 of the second edition)

Can somebody tell me what these ribs look like?

On the inside the car has some small triangular ribs(gussets?) running between the walls and the roof. I looked at a later 6464 boxcar I had handy (6464-75 Rock Island, Type II from 1969), and it did not have the ribs (gussets?)

So is the Western Pacific boxcar this "rare" variation?

I can take a picture and post it if that would be helpful.

C.W., I am not an expert on 6464's myself, and I don't have a specific answer to your question. I only have 5 myself, 3 PW and 2 of the late issues. However, I do find them interesting.

I don't know if you're aware of the great articles that Mike Stella, Jim Herron,  Bob Mintz and  others have published in the TCA's E-Train publication. I could peruse them for hours (and have done so!) Here is the index; you may find an answer to your question in one of these articles:

Here is a great chart with all (?) of the 6464's listed, with pics:
