There has are numerous ways to power a train line.  And each one of them is better than sliced bread, better than "Ethyl" in your tank.

Me, I have two transformers, one ancient one from 1948 (my first layout, a figure 8 on a piece of plywood that was set up on castors) I could keep it under my bed and roll it out when i needed to play with it.  The other one from about 7 yrs ago when i re entered model railroad, and it is a simple Lionel 80 watt

here is my proposed layout.

the building is done, the base for layout is done, most track and switches are here.  have this layout almost finished (rough not attached to anything, rail connectors removed)  Once track all fits and is on the board.  At this time i can look at it, like it, dislike it, decide if this is it, whatever,  might scrap the whole layout and do another but

now comes the part about transformers! and power  like i said all kinds to chose from,  lets reverse it, what are the features that disappointed you or you did not like, how many spent more $$$ than really needed.  Is KISS keep it simple stupid correct?  or does it need every bell and whistle??

More questions than answers:

Will you be running TMCC?, Exclusively?

Will you be running DCS?, Exclusively?

Will you be running a lot of passenger trains?

Accessories? Yes or No? How many?

Lighted buildings? How Many?

The "ancient one" What model is it? As an aside, i have an old RW from the same vintage that i just had rebuilt and use exclusively to power about 30 - 40 small incandescent lamps and 100 or so LED's in various buildings.

Anyway a little more info and we can make some recommendations that won't result in overkill but give you more than adequate power. OR you can shell out about $300+ for a Z4000 and be done with it.

PROBABLY, I have two controllers and the power packs, and so far i like the SC-2 for switches,

ross switches,  one multi crossover with four motors, 2 rh 054, two lh054, 1 rh o42, 1 rh 072

probably one small (four cars) passenger (036 restricted curves)

moderate amount of lighting including Miller engineering digital bill boards (neat stuff)

15 or so buildings all lighted, street lamps and area lighting, (feel i will need a separate power source for ac for lights?  switches (hoping the main transformer can do this, only 4 DZ1000 and  4 DZ2500 switch motors, with the sc-2 as needed? (total of 6 ross)

not even sure what the old transformer is, it is in box in attic and is old lionel, have not looked at it in years and years

i do have some DC accessories that i will need to power, but i have many options for that,  happen to have bunches of power supplies, large amperage if needed,  can handle 250 watts if needed, (doubt that that is needed though, have three astron 50 amp well regulated pure DC power supplies, they can handle HF transmitters that put out 100 watts continuous duty)  but i built some audio circuits that produce street noise, and some for the hobo campfire, and flashing street signals so forth, but that is covered

this building

has total of three little lamps in it,  i would like to put one inside.

I would like to increase the lighting in each building, i have a software program that will create window scenes that are to correct scale and will be appropriate size printed on acetate to give each room a different look all in 1:48 scale and then on to acetate, then to OGR size window , really cool stuff when done right and back lit,  can even add a window screen 1/3 down or so,  makes the windows look absolutely correct in every detail, i even took a photo of my bride with our labrador retriever Murphy sitting in overstuffed chair and sized it and put it into a window could swear that it was real

as said earlier, this new train stuff is so new to me, i went to a train show when i bought my little lionel set and was introduced to TMCC, thought it was the ****dest thing i ever saw,  and unfortunately am now hooked, but to go from one train with one transformer

(basic 027) to 2014 possibilities over night is kinda overwhelming, especailly when i do not evenknow the language like WHAT IS DCS??
