The high box couplers were reserved for the 800-2800 10" freight cars and and the 61x-261x  passenger consists. Usually only the most expensive sets that were pulled by the 226e got them. When the larger cars came in sets with the 225e the 2245 tender which had the higher coupler was used. However, the Semi-scale freight and the Madison series heavyweights used the lower coupler in which case the 226e came with the 2226x tender and the 225e used the regular 2235 tender. The special tenders were available as separate sale items so that one could run both coupler heights with one locomotive, but if you could afford to do that, you probably would just go ahead and buy each whole outfit.
