i have an intermediate knowledge of autocad2008. i'm unable to utilize my old work platform, as all part-time contractor committments  are on hold indefinitely. i have a 2012 apple/max platform at home set up for basic office business apt's my wife utilizes . i've been trying to read into some of the posts here to understand more about these train design programs ?  i tried to install a couple an ended up crashing comptr. ?  can i get some 'simple' advice on a beginning but 'build on' company program w/o cost of alot of money. i have my basic plan all layed out on blueline / backline .  would like to get it into this new venue to add the detail layers like autocad for track, electrical, intruments, power, towns, scenic features.  i've seen some real beautiful designs from some of you.  i have been involved with table building in over 20yrs since the children were around - but that was strictly lionel postwar stuff . but we had fun.  i've been fixing, restoring, consolidating an getting ready for retirement.  i've been helping my children paying it forward , now my gr/kids.   well thanks for your patience,  hope i can get a couple ideas to get started - i've always worked from design dwg's = taught by my father.   ~ Doug

On a Mac, your choices are limted. I think RRT is the only option. You can try "wine" and possibly run SCARM free, or Anyrail free version in a virtual widows environment, but it seemed hit or miss for others. (i think SCARM might be the most easily manipulated and easily related to by cad folk...? (I haven't done cad since the 80s w/command line. It almost has to be better today...?)

Free versions have limited track/objects amounts (50pc?) and no simulations, etc. but still work great, and a good way to decide if the premium of that brand is what you need.

Note: older used windows machines are cheap. Just use it for design and move the files to the Mac or cloud saved as jpg. (you will likely see many scarm files in posts, etc, that need an extension change. Not a big concern when aware of it. If you want to change things in the file, swap in the scarm extension vs jpg or whatever. That simple.)
