Hi....I have an MTH Railking #30-1157-1 USRA Mallet Steam Engine with Proto-Sound 1....QSI sounds. All the sound functions work, the smoke unit works, headlight works, the battery has been replaced & you can hear the engine chuffing sounds, but it will not move...forward or backward. I need help. What could be wrong with it ? Is it just good for being a door stop now ? my email address is...classic426hemi@mymetronet.net....Any advise will help.....Patrick

There is always a chance it is locked in neutral. Do you still have the manual? There is a series of throttle up/downs you can do at start up until you get to the point that you can reset the engine to factory defaults.
thanks for the reply. No,I do not have the manual.
Chuffing in PS1 is voltage based. You likely have a bad 4-pin harness or more likely the socket on the loco has a bad solder joint on one of the motor pins.

This is the link to the owner manual, hope it helps.
If you are getting chuffing with the engine not running, Jon is right, bad tether or solder joint on locomotive socket. Wiggle the tether and see if the engine starts running.
Hey Chuck.I did that about 3 months ago....wiggled it or pressed on it and it would move a little than stop. It did that several times and than i got disgusted and put it on my display shelf. Now 3 months later, even if I wiggle it...it will not move at all. If what you said about the tether pins is the problem, can this be repaired...very easily ? Thanks for all of the replys.
Pretty each fix for new harness, or touch up solder joints on the back of the engine pcb. The actual pins. Outer 2, that are motor function. G

With the uncertainties regarding MTH, I suggest downloading and/or printing a copy of the manual for each type of loco you own. It would not surprise me if the support pages disappear in the not-too-distant future.

I didn't realize it moved a while ago. I would say study the manual and go through the steps to make sure it isn't locked in neutral, and if that doesn't work follow up with GGG.
The fact that it's chuffing indicates that it doesn't think it's in neutral I believe.
I would try re-soldering the pins first. The pins are easy to get to. Remove the loco body and the cover over the socket, just heat the pins to remelt the solder. Then retry. If a no-go, the tether will need replacing.

Good point

I agree, I bought a flash drive a few years ago and downloaded all of my MTH locomotives manuals.
