I have an MTH U.P. Aerotrain  from 2012 with a ProtoSound 3.0 label on the frame but NO DCS/DCCswitch.

I've been told that one of the major differences between a PS 2 and PS 3 engine is the dual DCS/DCC capability but my PS 3 0 engine doesn't have a DCC/DCC switch. Why not? The engine's frame does have a slot along the edge labeled DCS/DCC but it's EMPTY WITH NO SWITCH. If this engine is really a PS 3.0 with DCS/DCC capability then how am I supposed to choose between the two modes without a switch?

*This U.P. Aerotrain is from the 2011, vol. 2 catalog that advertised it as being PS 2.0 but when delivered in early 2012 it had PS 3.0 electronics. There is mention on MTH's website about this model being delivered with PS 3.0electronics but no mention of the missing switch or DCS/DCC capability. So, is this engine really PS 3 without that switch? Btw, it does have a supercap instead of the battery PS 2 engines have.

Done on purpose now. Apparently a lot of people had engines set in DCC mode that would not run and were sending them back. Some sort of wiring change allows you to run in DCC if you want but it comes set in DCS mode.

I believe the switch was removed after several warranty problems where owners didn't understand the switch's purpose.

There is a jumper terminal to configure the board for DCC/DCS. That way it doesn't present an issue to users who can't read directions IMO.

As I just replied to another post about this issue, Joe is correct.  The switch was removed so that the engine would run only in DCS mode.  To run with DCC, you needed to open the shell and cut the grey wire.  At least this is the procedure with an SW-8 switcher made in 2017 that I just received.  Needless to say I won't be cutting the wire.  If you wanted to, you could install a switch and attach that wire to it and switch from DCS to DCC and back again.

Thanks for your input everyone.

Came across this interesting youtube video (below) about the DCS/DCC switch, especially the part about adding the switch to Railking engines. Near end of video fellow mentions having sent a Railking engine to "some talented and kind repair person in southeast Pennsylvania" to add the switch. I wonder if that repair guy was electronic guru,  Gunrunnerjohn.
