Folks,

I have a PS-1 General engine that has worked great until this week.  All of a sudden it started running slow And appeared to be laboring.  I have meters monitoring the voltage and amperage.  I noticed that the amps was hitting 4-6 amps with just the engine and the smoke unit on.  I turned off the smoke unit and it ran fine then. Obviously it is the smoke unit.  I would be Ok just leaving the smoke unit off but this one is a favorite with the kids because it puts out tons of smoke.

I was hoping someone who has more experience than I could give me some tips on what to look for.  I assume the smoke unit runs off the circuit board so I really hope it is not that.

Thanks,

Ed

Ed, your Protosounds loco has a small circuit board on the smoke unit, which converts AC to DC and steps the voltage down for the smoke motor. In my experience, this means that the smoke fan motor is probably on it's way out, and if you repair it promptly, it will keep the circuit board from toasting itself. While it is off the loco the wick should be changed as well. Hope this helps. I am an MTH service person, but I don't know how far you live from Pennsylvania.

Luke,

Thank you very much for the information.   I live just a few miles from PA.  I am in North Georgia.

Thanks for the great information.  Now that you mention the fan might be the problem I remember that right before it slowed down and the amps went up, the smoke seems like it wasn't coming out as usual.

i will open it up tomorrow and then see about ordering a fan and a wick.  Hopefully the fan unit is still available.

Thanks again for your help. I'll let you know how it works out.

Ed
