Hope some of you are able to give me some direction on how to fix this problem.  I have a MTH 30-1265-1 Northern Steam engine about 10 years old.  Love it, but now when I turn the smoke on from the remote it instantly jerks on the track till I turn the smoke off from the remote.

Haven't taken the cover off, but plan to soon and look around.

Battery?

Sound file?

Pinched wire?

Thanks a lot!!

George

how high is the current draw when running without smoke off and then how high is the current reading when you turn on the smoke unit, maybe the current is excessive. post what you find out and let us know and perhaps someone will know the answer to your question. does the voltage drop off a lot when you turn the smoke on, what is the voltage before you turn on smoke at a given transformer setting and what does the voltage change to after you turn on the smoke without changing the  throttle setting. this might give us a clue to help you?

that's a ps 2 5 volt board could also be a board problem but first check what I asked you to check and well go from there ok. let us know what you find out?

Either the smoke fan motor is bad and inducing noise, and or high current draw on 5V PS.  Or the heater elements are shorting to smoke housing.  You can unplug the heater connector in engine and try it.  If still jerking replace the fan motor.  If it stops jerking, check the elements to ensure they read 8 ohms and no continuity to smoke housing (Chassis Ground).  G
