Hi Folks,

I have an MTH PS2 Blue Goose with scale wheels that I had upgraded by an MTH service person to PS3.  My intention is to run it using DCC on a local club's O gauge 2-rail layout.   The service person who did the upgrade does not have a DCC system and is not familiar with DCC.  He is a DCS expert but he can't help me with DCC.

I borrowed a NCE DCC system from a friend to test the engine.  It runs fine using DCC.   My one problem is that I can't find out how to control the sound volume.  The sound blasts me out of the layout room.  I have done an extensive search on both the MTH and NCE websites trying to find information on how to adjust the sound volume using NCE DCC.

This is what I have tried so far:

1.  I tried adjusting the sound volume POT on the tender.  It doesn't work.  I don't know why.  Perhaps it only works when the engine is in DCS mode?

2.  The DCC master volume function, F6, turns the sound completely on and off.  There is no in-between.  It is either on or off.

3.  The MTH manual says repeatedly pressing F7 will allow you to adjust the sound from 0 to 9.  Elsewhere the MTH manual it says F7 controls the coupler sounds.  Sure enough, pressing F7 controls the coupler sounds but does nothing for the sound volume.

I hope that someone can give me some information on how to use the NCE DCC system to adjust the sound volume.

Thanks in advance.

NH Joe

After reading more than I want to about DCC, I found that I need to reset one of the Configuration Variables (CVs) to control the sound.  Each manufacturer has its own CV list.  Someone suggested that sound is controlled by either CV 55 or CV 63.  I tried both without any change.  I can't find a CV list for PS3 on the MTH website so I am going to ask MTH for a list of the CVs.  Unfortunately, my experience with MTH service is that my emails don't get answered.  Perhaps I can call tomorrow morning.

Ask your installer what sound file used and than download that PS-3 engine instruction from the manual.  I am not a DCC expert, but the back of the PS-3 manual has a lot of additional DCC information.

Here is a sound example:

Note: The Function Identification number IS NOT the F Function number you would

use on your DCC handheld. It is used internally in the engine.

SOUNDS

Bell 1

Brake Sounds 2

Cab Chatter 3

Clickety Clack 4

Coupler Close 5

Coupler Slack 6

Drift Chuff 7

Engine Sounds 8

Forward Signal 9

Grade Crossing Signal 10

Horn 11

Idle Sequence 1 12

Idle Sequence 2 13

Idle Sequence 3 14

Idle Sequence 4 15

Labor Chuff 16

Master Volume 17

Short Horn 18

One Shot Doppler 19

Reverse Signal 20

Hi Folks,

I was back on the internet today.  I Googled "MTH CVs" and found a manual for a HO PS3 Challenger.

The manual said this:

"Master Volume
F6 – Master Volume

There are 10 volume levels. Pressing F6 twice (toggling on then off) raises the Master Volume one level. The Master Volume loops. That is, if you go past the 10th level it will loop back around to the 1st or lowest volume level."

I figured that PS3 in HO is probably the same as PS3 in O.  I went and toggled F6 on and off as described above.  The sound went from full on to full off.  However, when I pressed F6 rapidly 3 times in a row the sound stopped at about half volume and stayed there.

This appears to be the best that I can do to control the volume at this time.  Half volume is OK for now.  At least I am not being blasted out of the layout room.

I wish that MTH had a better way to find this information on its website.

Here is an update:  I was at my HO club today.  A friend brought in a HO MTH PS3 SD70ACe diesel.  It is a beautiful model.  The club uses the NCE DCC system.

I tested the F6 sound feature.  It worked.  Pushing F6 allowed me to control the HO engine's sound volume from full off to full on and for multiple steps in-between.  The owner finally settled on leaving the sound at about the 1/3 level.  Even a HO engine can make a lot of noise.

Clearly F6 is how to control the sound volume on PS3 engines in the DCC mode.  I just don't understand why the HO engine has better control than my O gauge engine.
