My club recently purchased a used Railking SD45-2 (30-20118-1). It tested OK and ran for about a total of 2 hours with no issues. A few days ago we put it on the club's track and the engine took off at full speed as soon as power was turned on to the track. I'm asking if anyone has any suggestions on what to check. I fear the PS3 board may be bad in which case it would cost more to replace it than we paid for the engine.

Here's what we've observed:

  • Under DCS: Turn power on to the layout, this brings up the TIU and should send out the watchdog signal. As soon as power comes on the engine takes off full speed with no sound or lights. I tried it on my home layout and the engine did the same.
  • Conventional: In this case the TIU is off and bypassed so there is no DCS signal on the track. Engine starts up slowly and smoothly but with no sounds or lights. After about 20 seconds the sounds and lights come on and the engine responds to the throttle and horn and bell buttons normally. Every once and a while the engine sounds and lights will cut off for a few seconds and then come back on. I did notice when I hit the direction button on the Z4000, the engine doesn't go into neutral, it immediately reverses. I don't know whether this is normal for PS3 as I rarely run PS3 engines in conventional.

Any ideas?

Ken

Top suspect is a problem with the motor, one lead shorted to the frame will exhibit these symptoms.  STOP POWERING IT UP until you open it up and check the wiring and the motor for shorts to the frame.

as yogi said, "might be deja vu all over again."

i hope we don't have a matching pair: What are my options to replace a PS3 board and drive motor on a Railking Imperial 30-20316-1 | O Gauge Railroading On Line Forum (ogaugerr.com)

on a more serious note, any theories on why these motor resistances vary so much? i measured a lot more than 4 ohms Ken found, assuming my meter is not off base.
