It's good software.

The learning curve is not too bad if you have basic computer skills.

I have a sheet of shortcuts I can send if you like, that may help.

I don't have V 5.0; but all previous versions have various key actions scattered throughout the manual.

If you use it only once in a while like most, it's hard to remember the right key combinations for actions like measuring, duplicating objects, etc.

Another thing that has always been a pain (at least in past versions) is printing.

Maybe its more intuitive now; we can only hope.

Having said that, it is handy software and the libraries are quite complete.

I am hoping one day they will add the capability to custom cut FasTrack fitters.

Fred;

Here it is; you can copy it to a Word document and print if you like:

RR-Track Quick Reference (V 4.02)          Apr 2012

Left click:                To select and highlight item (cursor on piece)

Double click:           To select all attached pieces (cursor on piece)

Double click:           To duplicate last track piece (cursor in open area)

Ctrl-double click:      To duplicate last object (cursor in open area)

Shift-left click:         To select (or de-select) another piece or object

Hold left button:       To select and move piece (cursor on piece)

Box section:            To select all within box

Left click:                At screen edge to move the screen 10% in that direction

Right click:              To see piece properties (cursor on piece)

Right click:              To get shorthand menu

Esc:                    To defeat auto-join while placing track

Undo Last Track:     In the shortcut menu to undo the last track piece

Scroll wheel:           To move up and down in a layout window

Shift -Scroll wheel:   To move right and left in layout window

Objects

Double click:           To close polygon objects

Ctrl-double click:      To duplicate last object

Measuring

Alt-right click:                    To snap measure to closest track ends

Shift-right click:       To measure point to point

Saving Layout Files

If you let RR-Track save files to the default RR-Track directory you won’t be able to find them within Windows for backing up, copying, whatever. Save files to the desktop instead, then move them to a folder of your choice.

If we purchase the new version, we should get a discount since we paid for the old version and its no longer of any use to us. lol

I seen a few have posted your emails on a public forum. It would be wise to you to edit it out now. There is a reason why they are in our profiles. There has been past experiences of software that scans public forums for emails and send who knows what. Just a little tip.  In the future use AT instead of @  and DOT  instead of .

Besides that the best thing to do with the software is to use it and use it. Me personally took about 3 -4 good nights of messing around to be able to get a good feel for it. Wish i knew all those shortcuts before.I found that the grade was the most challenging, directions werent all that good.

Thanks

If you upgrade to V5, you get updated versions of any libraries you have purchased. He isn't giving discounts on the version upgrade. I think it is a business decision. I upgraded and like it. Each will have to make a consumer decision, if they think the price is fair, worth it, etc. One thing I have noticed, h is quick to add library updates. Fasttrack O31 hasn't shipped (I don't think), yet he has the library update already.

I'm hoping he focuses next on easier scenery, wiring, the ability to cut balasted sectional track and a feature to add a custom adapter between track brands.

Patrick, thanks for the tip. I edited mine out of my posts.

I believe I did get a discount. I Think there was a discount if you upgraded by a stated deadline some months ago.

All in all, RR-Track 5 is good, and the learning curve isn't bad at all.If you have ever worked with other drawing type programs, most of the functional mainstays are in RR Track.

That said, I found multiple instances of instability with Win 7 when switching between different views. Make sure you "save" frequently and before changing views.

One limitation I hope to see rectified in the future versions is the 80" limit on custom cuts, and the pop-up menus loose their "DOS" look.

There was a discount offered for upgrades from V4, deadline was sometime early last year (I'm thinking end of February). Think I paid $39, adding tax and shipping still kept it under $50.

For those talking about a 3 1/2 floppy, was that V4?  My V4 came on a CD.

Don't feel too bad.  I wasn't offered a discount on Windows XP by Microsoft when I mentioned I was a previous Windows 3.11 user either.

You just create the 2nd level by laying track but set the track elevation to whatever you want.  So you lay your first piece for this new layer, then set its elevation, say to 10".  That will make it 10" above the your first layer, which defaults to elev 0".  Then as you attach new pieces of track to that 10" elev track, they will inherit the elevation.

Is that what you're asking?

RR Track V4 works as well on my Mac using VM Ware as on my PC's. Precautions sited previously still apply.  Save often, not as stable a software as stated by seller.  It seems to me the bigger the layout the less stable, but what else are you going to use. It is the most common one used in articles for O gauge. Randal Pfeiffer's rd Planit El Dorado Software would be an option.
