PW Budds vs 2009 Budds

Setting aside that any attempt to do this would be pretty obvious to the eye because of the decades-long aging of the postwar shells, the lettering on the postwar shells is heat-stamped, which you can feel with your fingertips.  

Just some guesses, since I own neither. 

I'm assuming the lettering and numbers on the PW Budds are heat stamped into the plastic shell.  Also, the Budd RDC identification is a decal.

On the newer remakes these are probably reproduced with modern tamping methods common in today's production.

There could be a molded in model number inside the shell of the PW version that is not on the remake.

I own the remakes - I believe the shell says Lionel LLC/Made in China on the inside, but I would have to double check. On the flipside, I think the original would say Lionel Corp/NY, NY/ Made in USA either on the frame or shell. The heat stamp of the postwar lettering would also be a give away

It seems you folks are saying that Lionel Trains Incorporated no longer uses heat stamping. Is that right?

When was that? Lionel was still heat stamping and doing heat applied decorating in 1990-92 when they made the first reproduction of the scale Hudson (18005). They showed various decorating processes in the film about its manufacture. I will start a separate thread.

I'm looking on line at a few pw 400 & 404 Budds. Looking close I can't tell if they're heat stamped or just stamped. I guess I'll ask the sellers if they can post a pic of the inside of the shell, maybe I can see if there's a difference where it was made.
