I recently found this drawing in a August 1945 issue of Model Railroader. My research led me to the NWHS and shows it being of class “CG.” Can some of you N&W guys confirm that?
N&W did have a CG class steel sided cabin cars (caboose in N&W terms). Built in the Roanoke shops starting in 1927. Weaver, Kohs, and I think Sunset all made CG class cabs in O scale.
I have the N&W caboose book which I would gladly loan you. Just say the word and it's on the way. I have more than one copy so no rush returning it. I have some unpainted Sunset cabooses so I can loan you one for detailing purposes.
Thanks for the kind offer but I’m not building one. I have gone through about 200 MRR from 30/40-50’s and found many good freight and caboose drawings. I’m filing them away in case I need them in the future. This one and an early Union RR cab were the only 2 I had questions about.
The number in the drawing calls it a CG, but the CG cabooses were not built with windows on the ends. The CH (518406-518425) has the windows on the end. From the book "Cabooses of the Norfolk and Western," "These cabooses (CH) were built with two windows on each end, which was a departure from the previous CF and CG classes."
