Does anyone know whether Lionel's current (and recent) fan driven smoke units are derived from TAS ones (after all, Mike Reagan owned TAS before Lionel bought it up)? A buddy had one of their puff 'n chuff units installed years ago in a steamer and it's great. So I am wondering how similar in size, smoke output etc. current Lionel smoke units are to the ones TAS made. Are they the same unit but now rebadged as Lionel? If not, do any of you know a dealer who may have "new" old stock TAS puff 'n chuff units and will install them?

I had TAS do a PS-2 upgrade years ago on a K-Line Mikado and the smoke unit works good, it isn't MTH volume but pretty good.

I will be surprised if it turns out to be the same, it works good, while what Lionel is shipping out now is crap, 3 new Legacy Engines purchased in the past 6 months, all had to go back for smoke unit failures.

I cannot see that any of the current crop of Lionel smoke units, particularly those used in Legacy engines, is based on the TAS design, despite Mike R's past connection with TAS. The variety of different units that Lionel use is a little bewildering and the performance is not uniform although generally better than the SMUs in TMCC engines from, say, 2005.

MTH units on the other hand bear at least a physical resemblance to TAS units and perform as well too.

Slightly off topic but Sunset 3rd Rail still advertise their 3 rail steamers as having TAS units. If that's right they must have a hoard of them somewhere but the performance of the units they come with is generally not a patch on what I have got from TAS replacement units in the PS2 conversions that they used to do.
