J thought that I would throw this out here on the forum, as somebody surely will have some knowledge about these.   Does anyone have any experience with Loksound decoders, and sound systems?  How do these rate against NCE products?   There is an Overland engine that I contemplate on buying that has a Loksound DCC decoder and sound unit installed.  From what I see on the website, these seem kind of small for O scale as the max rating is 1.1 amps.  more so for HO not O which I'd feel safer with a 4 amp unit like what NCE sells.   Any thoughts or comments on this......   Thanks!

The LokSound XL series is what you want to be looking at, such as the LokSound XL 4.0

They have plenty of juice for O Scale, full specs are here

IMO, their sound quality, motor control and lighting/function outputs are better than the older QSI stuff that Atlas put in their Gold Series locos.

You need to determine which Loksound decoder is already installed in the engine. As Mike pointed out, only the XL version has a rating higher than 1.2 amps. The XL has a larger footprint of over 2" square. Loksound does have excellent sound and control characteristics and the new 4.0 version has the ability to handle 8 ohm speakers.

Another decoder to consider is the QSI Titan U. It is rated for 2 amps, and the Titan series has outstanding sound and control qualities.

Richard,

As noted, the Loksound decoders are first rate decoders for sound, motor control and function outputs.  IMO, Depending on the loco in question, if the price is right, you might as well get it and should you not like it I know you'll be able to sell the decoder and install the decoder of choice! Sounds like the NCE 408SR series?  All the difficult work is already done.  What sounds are programmed into the LokSound right now?
