I typically use the medium steam ERR board for a Hudson, but obviously you can use any of the steam boards that suit your ear. :-)  My "standard" upgrade for conventional steamers is the Cruise Commander (for small units, the Cruise Commander Lite), the RailSounds Commander (sound set of your choice), the MTH smoke unit, and of course, my Super-Chuffer.

 

Jon is correct, you have to have a fan driven smoke unit to use the Super-Chuffer for smoke effects.  The Super-Chuffer manages the smoke fan to give you better timed smoke chuffing as well as continuous low speed smoke at idle.  It also gives you the option of Rule-17 lighting with an LED headlight, and automatic cab light control.
