My set finally arrived yesterday and while I expected the cars to have missing logos, I did not expect the craftsmanship to be inferior to the first R-36 production. Or maybe just my particular set has flaws?  Most noticeable are the gates. One of them was completely broken off (although it can be glued back on)  Any one else notice the same problem or other flaws?

None of the gates appear broken off on mine. The one flaw that was obvious was that one of the trailing cars had the plunger that activates the coupler snapped off and loose in the box. I contacted Midge at MTH on this and she said she would have to get back to me on it. Otherwise the set looks great and so far runs well also. On the powered car the headlamps at the top are different from eachother in that on one side one is a bright white headlamp and the other side is warm white in color. Is that supposed to be that way? I am thinking it is but just curious.

Yes, on two or three they are slightly "squished in". Woops, I guess mine are flawed also. On one gate it is like the photo third one down from the top and the other one or two less so than that.

Not surprised.

Those gates are brass and the paint will chip off operating on 036 curves if you run short couplers.

Unless the window glue or interior design has changed, they will fall out later on.

I just had 2 new Lionel diesels fixed because they wouldn’t couple together.

The R-40 had about 8 issues right out of the box. My motor car gates are twisted and deformed.

The tiny side red markers are starting to fall out now. Make that issue #9.

These companies need to follow and perform ISO Quality inspections, standards and guidelines.

The original R36 set must have had gates that stuck out much more as on these they stick out no more than 1/8" and do not come close to hitting on 036 Fastrack curves.

I agree that these companies need to have better quality control. On two other sets that I purchased I spent time putting back and replacing windows that fell out and or curled up. Since I always add passengers to these cars at least I repaired the windows as I added passengers.

Steve, Thanks again for the art work on the R36 logos. They came out great and work for me.

"...hows the sound file

Features..."

I can only compare it to my other MTH sets as I never owned the original R36 set. There are still the same number of stops as my other sets. The sounds seem perhaps a little clearer. Very similar sounds to my other sets, like the "pardon me" and other backround station sounds. I was hoping that there would be more stops with PS3, but that unfortunately is not the case. So aside from not having to deal with a battery and having LEDs for the headlights I see no major advantages of the new system. Am I missing anything feature wise I am not aware of? Since I missed getting the first run of the R36, I am still happy I bought this one even with the lack of MTA logos.

Illuminated Number Boards

Come on Brian, even the R-12’s listed that feature back in 2006. Where ya been?

I stopped reading MTH’s incorrect cookie cutter information years ago.

No one there ever accurately customizes each catalog item with its actual details. If that were the case, we’d never get the product.

Often the product looks better in person vs. the catalog photo too.

Let it go buddy....

So the whole bigger sound file was BS, or they didn't utilize it. I'd rather have the logos then the LED's. WoW, it really stinks that they don't make a new sound file for each train other than the stops. It's a 1/2 hour job. People in these jobs should put a little more effort into there work.

I picked up a set but I plan on swapping the shells and getting what I can for the PS2 set with the new shells. That's why I was curious about lighted number boards.

That makes sense to me. They also probably know that many people switch to the shorter couplers and ran into problems like Steve mentioned with the gates hitting and chipping.
