Hi guys. I have been away from the hobby for a few years, but the recent release of the NS heritage units has me interested again. I live in Winston-Salem NC, however I dont really know of any good spots to photograph / video trains. The only places Ive ever attempted to take video is at the train station in downtown Salisbury. Can anybody suggest any good spots in the Piedmont area? Also, does anyone know the current location of the Central of Georgia unit? It was in Winston-Salem last week, but I wasn't able to get a photo. Thanks.

My favorite in the general area is the Yadkin River Bridge on the north side of Spencer.  There is also the depot/chair in Thomasville, and the big cut at the High Point depot (although it's more of a scenic shot than a locomotive shot because of the confines).  The River Road crossing (I believe that's the name--it's the 2nd crossing) in Jamestown is good for a northbound in the morning with a bit of a hill to boot.

It's been forever since I've done anything around W-S, and the last time was shooting the trackage out on Stratford Road, and a bunch of memories of the NS Steam Program going up through there.  If you can still get in there, the Yadkin River Bridge off Idols Road on the back side of Clemmons used to be a good shot, but no idea how often they run up there with anything.  They have certainly done a bunch of trackwork out there with new ties and ballast though, but so far I don't think it's progressed towards Hanes Mall.

I would imagine there are some good shots up the Punkin' Vine towards Roanoke, but only shot there once riding with a friend.  Any of the satellite photo places (Google Earth, Bing Maps, etc) can usually point you into a possible shot.

Good luck,

Kevin

ncogaugefan, the best place to railfan in the piedmont-triad area is at pomona yard in greensboro,nc. depending on what time you get there, you can see the piedmont and carolinian passenger trains, various mixed and intermodal trains. trains 213 and 214 stop in greensboro to exchange intermodal cars. train 194 drops off cars for train p-30 to winston-salem and you can also see older diesels (gp-38-2, gp50, sd40, and sd40-2) handling switching duties. (most of the switching in pomona yard is done by remote control engines). if you have a scanner, you can keep up with trains arriving and departing greensboro. also train p-30 runs several times during the day from greensboro to winston-salem and back. if you want to stay close to winston-salem, you can go to north winston yard on liberty street to see various auto racks and grain trains coming in from roanoke va. to winston-salem. there is not a lot of activity in north winston yard except when a train comes in from either greensboro or roanoke.....................rogerw.

ncogaugefan, i took pictures of the central of georgia unit when it arrived in north winston yard. i spoke to the yardmaster and he told me that they were going to turn the engine around on the wye and send it back to roanoke va. here is the pictures that i took of the central of georgia...............rogerw.
