Very interesting thread!

My railroad hero:

Avventino Michael Bartello, "Mike", my maternal grandfather.  He was born in the Italian Alps in 1886.  Came to America in 1895 as the oldest child of a large family.  Served with the Rough Riders after the Spanish American War.  Worked for the B&O as a fireman on the Pittsburgh to Mount Jewett run until he enlisted in the Marines in 1918.  Suffered a back injury and lung damage from mustard gas in France.  Tried to come back to work at the B&O in 1926, but was declared disabled.  Passed away in 1952, four years before I was born.  I grew up 1/2 mile from the tracks he fired on and 3 miles from his home at the top of Bakerstown Hill.  This was my maternal grandfather, but my dad told me grandpa's stories of running the Mallets up and down Bakerstown Hill.

My Model Railroad Hero:

John Allen.  His photos and stories in the model railroad press in the 1960s are what inspired me to save up my quarters to buy a train set when I was about 12.

Any information about this photo? Place, date, who took it, and names?

That's a screen shot from a Pentrex DVD titled "Chicago Steam Celebration" and it's about the 1993 NRHS Chicago Convention. The location is the Lansing, IL. UP railyards. 3985 was there and came into town via St. Louis & NKP 765 was doubleheaded with 587 and was pulling the Independence Express.
