I hope this isn't too far off-topic, but at least it's railroad oriented.
My all-time favorite RR film is "Emperor of the North" (1973), a Depression-era tale with great acting and lots of train operating shots. Lee Marvin & Ernest Borgnine.
My second favorite is "Unstoppable" (2010), about a runaway train with nobody on board, carrying a dangerous cargo through populated areas. Denzil Washington.

My favorite has to be the John Frankenheimer classic...The Train starring Burt Lancaster. I believe it was released in 1964. As for my second favorite I would have to say is Von Ryan's Express starring ole' blue eyes Frank Sinatra, from 1965.

A film that has lots of trains but not known as a train film is 'Sullivan's travels'. A film producer wants to find out what the hobo life is like....but gets in too deep. An interesting film and used as inspiration for the modern film 'O brother'!

I recently bought "The Train" from Amazon. It's right up there among my faves too!
But I'm surprised that nobody seconded "Emperor of the North".....

Probably the most realistic train films in the world have been produced by the Danish production company Skaggerak Nordzee in Copenhagen.

I definitely like "Emperor of the North", that is a very good movie as well.
"The Train" is a good train movie, and a great movie overall.

"The Station Agent" is one of my favorites. Kind of light on train action but an
interesting story. If you can stand 70's TV movies try "Disaster on the Coastliner".
