What "large" railroads served Detroit late 1940's and early 1950's?
I know Perre Marquette, which I believe was then taken over by C&O. Any others? Did the PRR actually make into Detroit (Dearborn)?
Thanks. I'm planning a future layout.

GTW/CN

I believe the Wabash came to the old Union Depot downtown, along with the Pere Marquette/C&O. NYC, GTW, DT&I as mentioned and possibly a couple others as well.
Here's a pretty neat interactive map / application.

Can see from 46 to 47 PM went to C&O.
Based on this, it was PM/C&O, GTW, MC/NYC... It does show PRR from Detroit to Romulus, but wonder if this is DT&I (which I think was a sub of PRR during that time)? There "other" as well... D&M, DTS, Wabash?
The B&O ran 'The Ambassador' from Washington, D.C. to Detroit for many years.
Here we go... even better data on Detroit specifically-

NYC, GTM, PM/C&O, Det. Term., DT&I, Wabash, PRR

That's a great website; it would be fabulous to find that format of rail history with maps for other states!
A copy of the September, 1951, Ofiicial Guide lists the following:
Baltimore & Ohio (b)
Canadian Pacific (b)
Chesapeake & Ohio (a)
Detroit & Toledo Shore Line !
Detroit Terminal !
Detroit Toledo & Ironton !
Grand Trunk (c)
New York Central (b)
Pennsylvania (a)
Wabash (a)
a and b 1-5/8 miles apart
a and c 7/8 miles apart
b and c 2-1/4 miles apart
! - Freight only.
To answer your second question, PRR had a branch to Detroit running from Toledo Jct, west of Mansfield, Oh, via Corrothers and Toledo.
Thanks for all the info, guys!
I have been planning for some years now to model the railroad operations of Henry Ford's River Rouge Complex in Dearborn. Been slowly finding/seeking equipment and storing them. Now I better know what I shoud be looking for.
Jim
You are going to need alot of real estate to model that plant. You have the big C&O yard on the east side and the DT&I on the north side. NYC had access on the west side and north side. They would deliver coke to Ford's...
Marty
I believe the plant also had some locomotives of its own.
