Madmax, If memory serves me correctly the 31799 great northern empire builder berk jr is straight up conventional Railsounds. This means you'll get idle sounds, chuff (when moving) whistle and bell. Which is exactly what you will get with any TMCC loco or Legacy loco. Legacy locos will provide a brief tower announcement after a very short blast of the horn! Hope this clears the confusion, Mike Lionel

I run only conventional.  I get idle, and chuffing or diesel roar, as the case may be, that is proportional to speed, and of course bell and whistle with any Lionel loco that has sound (railsounds, tmcc, legacy, vision, etc) and with MTH PSx locos.  The sound is better quality - richer, more variation in sound with speed and acceleration, etc., with PS2 or 3, or particularly Legacy and vision (slightly better than PS3).  A couple of my high end Lionel locos also make braking noises when they slow down.

A few of my locos "talk to themselves" if left in neutral too long - they start doing engineer - traintalk discussions about water level in the boiler, etc., which frankly I find annoying, but its sort of interesting.

MTH stuff, right?

Lionel Stuff, per the manual:

CrewTalk    communication. These “call” and “response” radio messages occur automatically after the train has stopped. You will hear them at random intervals, ranging from thirty seconds to three minutes.

Again, incorrect John.  Legacy product does not have this behavior.  Our conventional only product does.  I wanted to make sure the original poster gets the correct information which is why I replied as I did.
