Hi all,
I have an older MTH PS1 steam engine that was upgraded to TMCC and RS with Train America Studios boards. Recently, the sounds just stopped working. I tried doing a TMCC feature reset (using code #4 for steam with smoke) to no avail. There is a quiet, rhythmic buzzing/chirping sound coming from the tender, and I have once gotten the whistle to work right when I turned on track power (but have not been able to replicate this). Any idea what's going on?

I should also add that this engine had not been run for about 10 years until recently.
Have you tried a different 8 ohm speaker? That could be the problem.
First stop is to reseat all the boards in the tender. Next, using a PLCC chip extractor, reseat the two socketed chips on the RS4 board. Do NOT try to pry the chips out with a screwdriver or similar, use ONLY the PLCC extraction tool.

Thanks John, I'll give that a shot. I have the chip extractor from the MTH PS1 reset kit, I assume that will work?
Yep, that will work fine. The object of the exercise is not to put any lateral stress on the socket, they break easily. You want the chip to be extracted straight up.
