I have been running a DCS Record & Playback session for the past two weeks, and it had run fine the first dozen times or so. One train is an ABA Santa Fe passenger with 10 cars, and the other a dual-headed diesel freight with 24 cars. Both trains had been returning to their starting location ±one-inch, and the freight train has returned within 1/4-inch several times. The freight train travels about 275 feet, and the passenger train 550 feet. The passenger train starts first and finishes last, and it takes about 16 minutes to run the Playback session.
However, on the last run Friday, and twice yesterday, the Playback runs were not quite the same as they had been. The freight train continues to run OK – it arrived short by one inch the first two runs, and then long by one inch the last time yesterday; all of which are A-OK as far as I am concerned.
The SF Passenger train, on the other hand, arrived short by two feet Friday, and then yesterday short by three feet on the last two runs.
Nothing has changed from earlier on when they ran perfectly; same Record & Playback session, same settings on the two ZW-L’s (full throttle), same cars, etc.
Since the DCS Record & Playback sessions use the number of motor revolutions to space the events, what could be causing the discrepancy all of a sudden in the passenger train? The only thing I can think of is wheel slip, but before I take the locomotives off the track (I prefer not to have to remove the ABA units), is there anything else you can think of that could be causing the problem?
Thank you for your help.
