A good friend of mine asked me to refurbish his Lionel 752-E which he  had as a young man. He came up with some pieces and then Picked up some more on eBay. He finally decided on what he wanted and that was a sliver M 10000 with some upgrades, we will talk about that later in my next installment. Finding paint for a 1934 engine was going to be hard but I found a brushed nickle that I thing fit the bill.               Original cars 1Original cars 2

These photos are of the original engine and it was going to be a task. So I got to work breaking it down and finding all the problems I could. The rotor on the pinion on the motor got pushed back and cut in to the rotor winding's.  You can see here where it was rubbing. 01d43b72c4a4ee219eaeae25d1ca55e1132dda631a Here are some photos of the final painting.Second painting 1second painting 2Second painting 3 The shells came out very nice and I had built my self a spray booth to do the work and it came out great. I will be updating this thread as I progress.  In the first painting you can see two more engines these are the ones that are in rough shape and I chose the one to the left as it came out good the other two will take some time to do.

UpDate:

I started to install the little people and they look good will need to do some paint touch up as I expected that and yes I hand painted them.

I love the 752 series.  I have one that I glass beaded and painted then baked the finish.  The inside has new window strips and  Bennett dry transfers.  I was at York many years ago when I came upon a NIB original Lionel motor for the power car.  The motor cost me $37.00.    I still have it today and it runs excellent.  I also have the Century Club M10000.  Thit is also a big keeper.

Marty, that is great, I am waiting for the rotor to come in so I can put the motor back together as the pinion was pushed back and rub on the frame and bared some of the wires. Yes this is a fun project of all of them I have done.

It is time for an update, Here is a photo of the cars painted and some are lettered, I got the motor rebuilt and will be testing it tomorrow.

The finish is Brushed Nickel From Lowes and is the best match I could find and it did come out great. The customer is very happy with how it looks. Paint and some of the lettering.

I have not clear coated the cars and I do not want to rush it.

The lettering was produced by Cedarleaf Custom Decals in Prescott Valley AZ.

When I get more done I will post an update.

Dan,  Very good looking M10000, and I agree on the fun and satisfaction of restoration.  I bought one years ago that had been "repainted" by previous owner.  It runs great with original motor cleaned up, and being silver, is contrast to the Century Club two tone I have.  I did not restore mine to 100% original, instead went to a leaning of "prototypical" in the markings, and will be doing more in future.

Great work, sir, and looking forward to final set.

Thanks for the compliments, this M10000 is not going to be the same as original motor is the same but some changes in its looks inside per the request of the owner. Yes it has been a work of love and it really makes me feel good. Thanks again.

Great job Dan. A good train friend of mine passed away this year and his daughter called me and wanted to give me something from his layout. She sent the three car 752w set plus three extra cars (not in the picture). They are the only trains you see in our house unless you go to the train room. Always liked those trains. DonDSC_4066

Howdy here is an update on the refurbishment. There are some blemishes on the cars that will be taken care of, wanted to make that my first point.

Front of engine with lights on

This is the front of the engine I was testing the led lighting that I modified to give a diverse lighting and not a spot. I ground down the end of the led and polished it.

Smoke test

This is the smoke test and interior lighting test. Smoke unit is running at full 18 volts.

These are the car lighting which is run on a constant current of around 5 ma which give a great effect and you can see the interiors that were added.

Full view of cars

This is a full view of all four cars less the engine. I will have ERR AC Commander and sound. The customer is ecstatic about the model and what we had talked about has come true and that really makes me happy. I added roller pickups and with a bit of engineering they run good.

Here is a photo of the updated M10000 rebuild with the  train sitting on my layout.

Refurbished M10000 sitting on the track on my layout.

Lionel M10000 and My MTH M10000

Here is my MTH 10000 sitting next to the Lionel M10000

I have been testing the motor and the Lionel M10000 It will pull all three cars but when I add the fourth one it will not pull and that is any fourth one. I have added a weight to the front of the motor and that has corrected part of the problem. It is looking like the field winding is not producing a strong enough field, I am going to update the motor to a Pullmor 200 series with truck and I believe it will correct the problem. It is running Electric Railroad TMCC upgrade with sound. I got all the articulation problems corrected and and they run well on the track as I push them along and under power that is 3 cars plus engine. I have checked the straightness of the chassis and they all checkout.

If anyone has any input let me know and I will keep you updated on the progress.
